Very few games were completed on Saturday as the persistent rain in the northwest Georgia area continues to play havoc with the various Dizzy Dean and Dixie Youth state baseball tournaments.Tournament organizers have tentatively rescheduled games for Sunday, although weather forecasts call for more rain much of the day.
One team that did get their opening game in on Saturday was Ringgold, who advanced in the Dizzy Dean 7-year-old sanctioned tournament in Rome with a win over Dawson County. Ringgold is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. Sunday versus Sandy Plains Red.
Boynton was rained out and is slated to face North Hall County at 10:30 Sunday morning in the bottom half of the bracket.
No games were played in the Dizzy Dean 7-year-old invitational tournament in Chatsworth on Saturday, meaning the first game for the LaFayette Lugnuts is set for 2:15 on Sunday afternoon against the Hobgood Hurricanes.
In Calhoun, the Dizzy Dean 8-year-old sanctioned tournament managed to get in a handful of first-round games, including Boynton's win over the Hobgood Storm. Boynton will face Powder Springs at 6:30 Sunday night.
The LaFayette Ramblers were not as fortunate as their games was called off just moments after taking the field against the NYO Longhorns. They will try again at 2 p.m. Sunday with the loser having to face Commerce at 5 p.m. in an elimination game.
Boynton, the lone Catoosa/Walker County entrant in the Dizzy Dean 8-year-old invitational tournament in Rossville, is scheduled to open tournament play against the EC Rebels at noon on Sunday.
Boynton is also the only local team in the Dizzy Dean 10-year-old invitational tournament in Canton. They will square off with Jackson County at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Rain has washed out the first two days of the 12-year-old sanctioned tournament in Fannin County, meaning the North Georgia All-Stars will try and take the field at 10 a.m. Sunday morning against the DC All-Stars.
And games in the Senior Division being hosted by Boynton have already been cancelled for Sunday. The tournament will start on Monday evening with the Boynton Bulldogs facing the North Georgia Chiefs at 8:30 p.m.
The Dixie Youth state tournament is also off to a soggy start, but teams will try to get back on the field Sunday at the Jack Mattox Complex in Ringgold and the LFO Recreation Association fields in Fort Oglethorpe.
In the 8-under AA brackets, LFORA will face off with Warner-Robins at 1 p.m. at Jack Mattox. Chickamauga will take on Perry at 2:30, while Ringgold and Troup County will do battle at 4.
Jack Mattox will also see the two LFORA representatives in action in the 12-year-old Ozone Division. LFO Mosier will face Dacula at 1 p.m., while LFO Crawford will go up against Peachtree Ridge American at 5 p.m.
