Microgravity research coming of age on the International Space Station

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? They say that necessity is the mother of invention, so when humans decided to build and inhabit a laboratory in the harsh environment of space, it was only natural that innovations would follow. The creators of these developments sought patents to protect their intellectual property, giving a way to gauge microgravity advancements. The recently published paper, "Microgravity-Related Patent History," by Mark Uhran, looks back at the more than 818 patents granted since 1981, as related to the term "microgravity."

Uhran, former NASA director, International Space Station Division Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, points out that the use of patents as an indicator of value creation signifies economic potential. In addition to the granted patents, he cites an additional 580 applications filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office during the last decade. There are undoubtedly station-related patents, according to Uhran, that do not include the term of microgravity. This means an even greater likelihood of additional innovations beyond those counted in his paper.

"Microgravity processing research is coming of age in much the same way that vacuum processing did at the close of the 19th century," said Uhran. "From vacuum technologies, the 20th century industrial revolution in microelectronics was born, and from microgravity technologies I predict a 21st century revolution in microbiotics that will dramatically change our approach to human health care and food production."

Developments based on microgravity investigations and exploration create compelling competition between agencies, scientists and engineers. This includes both research and technology developments, as seen in both cooperative and parallel projects that may lead to benefits for humanity.

"The fields of molecular and cellular biotechnology have already demonstrated the competitive advantages of microgravity environments," said Uhran.

The top seven patent categories include the following: biotechnologies (36%), instrumentation/analytical (13%), materials (12%), aerospace components (12%), and systems in the areas of thermal, measurement, and human health (4% each).

Macromolecular crystal growth and studies on bacterial pathogens in microgravity both show the potential from research aboard the space station to yield simultaneous beneficial developments for human health and global economies. "From the independent work of DeLucas, McPherson and Urade, we know that space is an effective tool for solving the structure of important biological macromolecules," said Uhran. "Nickerson and Hammond have both made competitive progress toward producing vaccines and therapeutics for bacterial pathogens."

While initially the U.S. government dominated microgravity-related patents, the area of industrial submissions quickly gained ground, with a continued growth that surpassed government, individual investigators and academia. These various sectors, Uhran asserts, are codependent. "The government role is to bridge the two [industry and academia] and demonstrate promise by underwriting long lead-time basic research, and proofs-of-concept for applications."

The grouping of the patent categories reveals the relationships inherent in knowledge growth and technological development. "In some cases, it's a scientific finding that enables the innovation of a new process or product on the ground that was never previously achievable," said Uhran. "In other cases, the process or product must function in the microgravity environment in order to yield an outcome that's not possible to duplicate on the ground under any conditions. Finally, a share of these patents are for products or processes that are needed to live and work in a microgravity environment."

Uhran concludes in his paper that his findings are merely the "tip of the proverbial iceberg." With the space station now at full utilization, he expects patents to grow rapidly, an indicator of advancing benefits on Earth and for future space exploration.

"Nothing could be more rewarding than to complete the International Space Station and meet all of the mission performance requirements we set back at the 1993 Critical Design Review," said Uhran. "We now have the laboratories we need, so what remains is a matter of political will and classic research portfolio management practices to capitalize on this incredible national asset."

Interesting, wish I had time for an RP... but I don't. I like this though, so if you ever need an rper in a few weeks/months I can probably do it.

Newer Pill has low blood clot risk: ob-gyn group

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A newer version of the Pill may carry a slightly higher blood clot risk than older formulations - but it's still a small risk, says the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In new recommendations, the group says that women should be aware of the "possible minimally increased risk" of blood clots with birth control pills containing the hormone drospirenone.

Those include big-selling brands like Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Safyral, along with their generic equivalents.

It has long been known that women on the Pill have a small, but higher-than-average risk of blood clots. And some recent studies have suggested that the risk is relatively higher with pills containing drospirenone.

But because of "study weaknesses," it's not certain whether that is the case, said Dr. Kavita Nanda, who helped draft the new ACOG recommendations.

And the absolute risk of blood clots with any birth control pill is small, ACOG says in a report in its journal Obstetrics & Gynecology.

For every 10,000 women using birth control pills over a year, there would be anywhere from three to nine cases of blood clots called venous thromboemboli. That compares with one to five cases for every 10,000 women who are not pregnant and not on the Pill.

With drospirenone-containing pills, some studies suggest there would be 10 cases per 10,000 women each year.

Venous thromboemboli usually form in the leg veins, but can travel to the lungs, where they cause a sometimes life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism.

Drospirenone is a synthetic form of progesterone that's different from the versions used in older "generations" of the Pill. Yasmin, which arrived on the market about a decade ago, and its sister "Yaz" products have been promoted as causing less weight gain and swelling than older-generation pills.

"Drospirenone oral contraceptives may also have advantages for some women with acne or premenstrual dysphoric disorder," Nanda said in an email, referring to a severe form of PMS that causes physical symptoms and severe mood swings.

FDA WARNING

Earlier, industry-funded studies of Yasmin, Yaz and related pills had found no elevated blood clot risk versus other Pill formulations. But several studies since 2009 have linked the newer contraceptives to relatively higher risks.

In a review of records from more than 800,000 U.S. women, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded that for every 10,000 women on drospirenone pills, there would be about 10 cases of blood clots over a year. That compared with six per 10,000 among women on older versions of the Pill.

Earlier this year, the FDA said it would add information on the possible risk to the products' labels.

According to ACOG, women should be aware of that information. But the choice of whether to use drospirenone pills, or any other form of birth control, should be up to women and their doctors, the group says.

Nanda said it's also important to remember that pregnancy carries a greater risk of blood clots than any birth control pill does.

For every 10,000 pregnant women, between five and 20 will develop a blood clot.

And the risk goes up in the few weeks after delivery - to between 40 and 65 cases per 10,000 women.

Nanda advised discussing all your birth control options with your provider.

"Oral contraceptives are but one method in a mix that includes several, including long-acting IUDs and implants," Nanda said.

In fact, IUDs (or intrauterine devices) and contraceptive implants are considered the most effective forms of reversible birth control. That's because the devices are put in place by your doctor and last for several years; they don't rely on a couple's ability to use them "perfectly," like birth control pills and condoms do.

As for blood clot risks, some women are at greater risk than others and may need to avoid any type of birth control pill. Smokers who are age 35 or older are among them.

Why Won't My Ex Talk To Me? - The Truth

Why Won\'t My Ex Talk To Me? - The Truth

Maybe you tried to start a conversation too soon, or maybe you simply tried to open the lines of communication too much. Regardless of the method that got you to this point, you're currently at a standstill. Your ex just isn't responding the way you'd like - or at all. The good news is that there are certainly ways to overcome even this kind of challenge to win your ex back and get your relationship back on track. The bad news is that it's going to take some time, some patience and some dedication along the way in order to accomplish your goals - but hardship is no cause to give up and call it quits.

Take a second to think back to a different breakup you went through. Even if you were the one that called it off, there were some significant emotions that came along with ending a relationship that you had been invested in. Your ex is going through the same thing right now. Understanding that can be the key to your overall success to win back their heart as long as you choose your path carefully and don't fall victim to impulse that can limit your opportunities to communicate in the future.

Acting with Dignity and Choosing Wisely:

It may be easier to just go with your instincts and allow the emotional side of the breakup to take over. In order to increase your chances for success, however, you need to put your impulses aside and try to examine the situation rationally. Finding the balance between the emotional and rational side may be easier said than done, but it is absolutely vital that you keep your emotions in check and continue to act in a way that doesn't diminish your self-respect in your own eyes - and in the eyes of your ex. Using the following guidelines for behavior that can move your forward as well as things that should be avoided can help you through the initial stages and get you to the point where communication can be reestablished beneficially.

- Don't Continue the Pursuit:

You may have a lot of unanswered questions for your ex that you legitimately deserve answers to, but now is not the time to pursue that line of thought. All that pursing them will accomplish is pushing them even further away from contact with you and is counter-productive to what you hope to accomplish. While your questions may be valid, your timing isn't - just be patient and believe that you'll be able to talk to them about the situation later on down the road.

- Don't fall into the trap of Self-Pity:

Being dumped automatically creates negative feelings and can easily progress into a downward spiral. Keep in mind, however, that the sooner you can overcome the wealth of negative emotions, the sooner you can begin the process of trying to reconnect with your ex. Instead of allowing your doubt to overwhelm you, choose to use this time to focus on your positive characteristics and keep your eye on the prize - a renewed relationship with your ex that has the potential to last.

- Enjoy some social input:

It may seem harder than normal to put yourself out there, but it's a definitive and important process towards recovery. Your social network is not only a built-in support network to help get you through these difficult times, but you want to make sure that you're creating a positive image that will get through to your ex. If your ex sees you out and about instead of sitting on the couch throwing a pity party, they're going to wonder what your secret is. Maybe they'll think you've moved on or found someone new. No matter what they think, you're on their mind - and that's an important piece of the puzzle to eventually communicating and winning back their heart.

- Think about the past productively:

You don't want to wallow in the past, but you do want to think about the process of when you and your ex first got together. What caused them to notice you out of all the potential people they could be with? What were you like when you first got together? It's possible to revamp your image and become the person that they initially fell for again. Not only can it help you feel better about yourself, it will make your ex remember the way things used to be as well. That fact goes a long way in reestablishing communication and getting the ball rolling in the right direction again.

Why They Seem to be Giving You the Cold Shoulder:

If your ex just isn't responding to any of your phone calls or messages, it's usually for one of two possible causes. Either you didn't wait long enough after the breakup to make initial contact, or you've gone overboard and contacted them too much. They're not going to realize that they made a potential mistake in leaving you if they don't have the chance to miss you first - and that simply won't happen until you give them some space to breathe. Not only does the distance work in your favor, but it also allows you some valuable time to come to terms with the situation on your own and make a plan going forward.

Going into the situation blind isn't going to do you any favors. You certainly need to have a plan in place that requires more than one step towards your end goal. Along the way, it's important to pay attention to the reaction you're getting, and that means that you have to be willing to put yourself in your ex's shoes. Understanding their thought process can be critical to your success, and there are many different avenues to explore. Overall, your plan is going to reunite you and your ex as long as you're willing to put in the effort and be patient. All of your hard work is going to pay off if you play your cards right.

What To Do Next

Being dumped can come as a massive shock, especially if your ex is no longer talking to you. If you acquire the right knowledge then your chances of winning back your ex will be vastly improved.

You can win your ex back. Knowing how to manage contact with your ex is one of the most important steps towards getting your relationship back on track again. Knowing how to avoid breakup mistakes is also essential if you want to achieve your goal.

Special Olympian Pens Retort to Pundit's ?Retard? Debate Tweet ...

Ann Coulter and John Franklin Stephens

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? A Special Olympian has penned a sharp retort to conservative pundit Ann Coulter after she referred to President Barack Obama as a ?retard? in a tweet following Monday night?s debate.

John Franklin Stephens, 30, who has Down syndrome, wrote the open letter to Coulter on the Special Olympics website that explains why her use of the word as an insult was hurtful.

Coulter, who has a long history of acid-tongued punditry, posted the following tweet following Monday night?s presidential debate between President Obama and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

When asked by Politicker.com for a clarification on the tweet, Coulter said,?The only people who will be offended are too retarded to understand it.?

In a response, Stephens said that he struggled to figure out a way to respond to Coulter?s use of the word ?retard.?

?I?m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public?s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow,? wrote Stephens. ?I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you.? In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.?

Stephens says that he realized Coulter was trying to insult the President by linking him to people like Stephens, and says that Coulter assumed that she would be able to get away with using the word and get away with it.

?Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor,? said Stephens, who invited Coulter to attend the Special Olympics. ?No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.?

(AP) ? Water from a leaking boiler collected just outside a room that was supposed to be sterile. Floor mats used by technicians were filled with dirt and debris. Drugs were shipped out before the company even confirmed they were sterile.

State officials said Tuesday that they found these and other problems at the New England Compounding Center during a preliminary investigation into the company, linked to a deadly outbreak of meningitis.

The probe can't yet conclusively prove what caused the outbreak, a top health official said. In the meantime, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said he wants to tighten oversight at similar companies, including with surprise inspections ? the first of which happened Tuesday.

The state has also moved to permanently revoke the company's operating license, as well as the licenses of its top three pharmacists.

"Those whose laboratory practices caused this outbreak should never practice pharmacy or manufacture in Massachusetts again," Patrick said.

The outbreak of fungal meningitis, an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, has sickened 308 people, including 23 who have died, in 17 states. The outbreak has been linked to a steroid made by the NECC and taken mainly for back pain. Compounding pharmacies like NECC custom mix solutions in doses or forms generally not commercially available.

The federal government is conducting a criminal investigation.

The state said Tuesday that its preliminary investigation, which began last month after the company was first suspected in the growing outbreak, found batches of drugs ready for general distribution but not labeled for specific patients.

Its state license permits the company to fill out only specific prescriptions for specific patients, and distributing drugs in batches like a manufacturer would violate that, said Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo, director of the state Department of Public Health's Bureau of Healthcare Safety.

But company attorney Paul Cirel said it's "hard to imagine" state regulators weren't previously aware of the scale of its operations because they've worked so closely together. The state Board of Registration in Pharmacy has always had complete access to the facility, and board members were there as recently as last summer, he said.

"NECC's transparency in dealing with the board since inception in 1998 demonstrates its good-faith intention to operate in compliance with the requirements of its license," Cirel said.

Besides possible state license violations, Biondolillo said the inspections also revealed "several health and safety deficiencies" at the NECC facility in Framingham, just west of Boston.

Three lots of steroids produced by the company are suspected in the outbreak, and the company shipped orders from those lots 13 times before receiving the results of its own tests to confirm those lots were sterile, Biondolillo said. Some medication was shipped as many as 11 days before the company received test results, she said.

Biondolillo also detailed signs of flawed sterilization procedures, including black specks of fungus in sealed vials of the steroids, which were returned to the company during a recall.

Investigators found the company didn't sterilize its products long enough and didn't adequately test whether its sterilization equipment was working, she said.

In addition, mats on which people wiped their shoes to remove contamination before entering a sterile environment were "visibly dirty and soiled with assorted debris," she said. And a leaking boiler adjacent to a pharmacy clean room left an unsanitary pool of water around it and the adjacent walls, she said.

As the investigation continues, Patrick's moves to increase oversight at the state's 25 compounding pharmacies have started.

The first of the unannounced inspections, to take place at least annually, was done on Tuesday, health department spokesman Alec Loftus said. He wouldn't give the inspected facility's name and said the results are being reviewed.

Patrick also said compounding pharmacies will now be required to file annual compliance reports that could help regulators determine if they are acting as manufacturers.

Men with certain cardiovascular risk factors may be at increased risk of peripheral artery disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Among nearly 45,000 men who were followed up for more than two decades, those with the risk factors of smoking, hypertension, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes had an associated greater risk of developing PAD, according to a study in the October 24/31 issue of JAMA.

"Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a distinct atherosclerotic syndrome marked by stenosis or occlusion [blockage] of the arteries, particularly of the lower extremities. PAD affects 8 to 10 million individuals in the United States, and is associated with reduced functional capacity and increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Despite its widespread prevalence and negative associations with quality of life, morbidity, and mortality, PAD remains underdiagnosed and undertreated," according to background information in the article. Preventable or treatable risk factors for PAD are generally thought to be similar to other forms of cardiovascular disease, however their respective associations with risk of PAD and the extent to which they are jointly associated with the incidence of PAD are not well established.

Michel M. Joosten, Ph.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, Boston, and colleagues conducted a study to estimate the individual and cumulative associations of the 4 conventional cardiovascular risk factors of smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and type 2 diabetes with the risk of PAD among men. The study included 44,985 men in the United States without a history of cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study in 1986; participants in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study were followed up for 25 years until January 2011. The presence of risk factors was updated biennially during follow-up.

During a median (midpoint) follow-up of 24.2 years, there were 537 cases of incident PAD. The researchers found that each risk factor was significantly and independently associated with a higher risk of PAD after adjustment for the other 3 risk factors and confounders. Regardless of duration category, all men with a risk factor had higher risks of developing PAD compared with men without risk factors. Each additional risk factor approximately doubled the risk for PAD. Men who did not have any of the 4 risk factors had a 77 percent lower risk for developing PAD compared with all other men in the group. In 96 percent of PAD cases, at least 1 of the 4 risk factors was present at the time of PAD diagnosis.

Risk of PAD tended to increase with duration of both type 2 diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. Among men with a positive history of hypertension, risk of PAD was higher among men who reported use of 1 antihypertensive drug or 2 or more antihypertensive drugs compared with men with hypertension who did not report current use of antihypertensive drugs. Cumulative intensity of smoking demonstrated a graded relationship with risk.

"In conclusion, in this well-characterized cohort of U.S. men followed up for longer than 2 decades, smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, and type 2 diabetes each demonstrated strong, graded, and independent associations with risk of clinically significant PAD," the authors write.

More BBC staff probed on sex claims post-Savile

LONDON (AP) ? A sexual abuse scandal shaking the BBC broadened Tuesday, with the broadcaster's chief saying the corporation was investigating claims of abuse and harassment against as many as 10 former and current staff.

The BBC has been rocked by allegations that longtime children's host Jimmy Savile, who died last year, abused underage teens over several decades, sometimes on BBC premises. Some of the alleged victims have accused other entertainers and BBC staff of participating in abuse during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Director-general George Entwistle told British lawmakers Tuesday that the BBC is looking into historical allegations of sexual abuse or harassment against "between eight and 10" past and present employees.

Separately, the BBC press office said it was aware of "nine allegations of sexual harassment, assault or inappropriate conduct" involving current staff or contributors to the BBC, which employs some 20,000 people.

Entwistle said it was too early to say whether sexual abuse had been endemic within Britain's publicly funded national broadcaster, but insisted the BBC would assist police if detectives chose to investigate whether there had been a pedophile ring at the corporation.

Entwistle acknowledged there had been "a problem of culture within the BBC ... a broader cultural problem" that allowed Savile's behavior to go unchecked.

"There is no question that what Jimmy Savile did and the way the BBC behaved ... will raise questions of trust for us and reputation for us," Entwistle said. "This is a gravely serious matter, and one cannot look back at it with anything other than horror."

Entwistle's testimony before the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee came a day after the BBC aired a powerful documentary about the corporation's role in the expanding sex abuse scandal involving Savile, who died a year ago at age 84.

Since Savile's death, scores of women and several men have come forward to say the entertainer ? a longtime host of music and children's programs including "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" ? abused them when they were children or teenagers. Police have identified more than 200 potential victims.

The BBC, one of the world's largest and most respected broadcasters, is under fire for failing to stop the abuse and for pulling an expose on Savile from TV schedules at the last minute in December. The sex allegations were later aired on the rival ITV network.

The head of the BBC's "Newsnight" program, Peter Rippon, has been suspended pending an investigation of his decision to scrap the Savile story.

Monday's documentary, which was watched by more than 5 million people, presented the unusual spectacle of BBC journalists grilling their own bosses about why the piece had been dropped.

In an attempt to get to the bottom of the story, the parliamentary committee spent two hours Tuesday questioning Entwistle, who has been in the BBC's top job for just a month, after years in senior news and current affairs roles.

It may also want to question his predecessor, Mark Thompson, who led the organization at the time the "Newsnight" report was yanked. Thompson was appointed chief executive of the New York Times Co. in August and is due to take up the post next month.

He told ITV News that if "the police inquiry or the select committee want to hear from me, of course I'll help in any way I can."

Few public figures have had as spectacular a fall from grace as the cigar-chomping, platinum-haired Savile, who was knighted for his charity fundraising and praised on his death as a popular if eccentric entertainer.

Since the ITV report aired earlier this month, his family has removed and destroyed his gravestone, and two charities named after him have announced they will close.

It is not just the BBC that is under fire. Schools and hospitals associated with Savile's charity work stand accused of letting him abuse young people during visits. And state prosecutors have acknowledged they investigated four abuse allegations against him in 2009, but did not press charges.

Child welfare experts say there is a sadly familiar pattern? seen also in the case of child-molesting Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky or pedophile priests in the Roman Catholic church ? of large organizations failing to act on claims of abuse from young people.

One of the revelations of Monday's documentary was that Rippon had sent an email expressing doubts about the Savile documentary because "our sources so far are just the women" ? Savile's accusers.

Entwistle insisted the BBC was not complacent about sexism, and had hired a senior lawyer to look at how it handles sexual harassment cases.

"I do believe the culture has changed since the '70s and '80s," Entwistle said. "But I'm not convinced it has changed as much as it should have."

He said Savile had been "a very skillful and successful sexual predator who covered his tracks."

"These things are institutionally, it seems, very difficult to deal with," he said.

Investing in companies is 'the wrong way to go'? - The Maddow Blog

Getty Images

Towards the end of last night's debate, Mitt Romney had to get one more Solyndra reference in, knowing he wouldn't get another chance. But in the process, he raised an odd point.

"We in this country can compete successfully with anyone in the world. And we're going to. We're going to have to have a president, however, that doesn't think that somehow the government investing in car companies like Tesla and Fisker, making electric battery cars -- this is not research, Mr. President. These are the government investing in companies, investing in Solyndra. This is a company. This isn't basic research. I want to invest in research. Research is great. Providing funding to universities and think tanks -- great. But investing in companies? Absolutely not. That's the wrong way to go.

I certainly understand the underlying point here, and it's true that this president, like all modern presidents, believes there's nothing wrong with the government sometimes investing in private companies. Romney, however, wants voters to see this as some sort of socialism run amok -- as if the very idea is too radical to even contemplate.

After all, what kind of left-wing extremist would find it acceptable for the government to invest tax dollars directly in private companies? Well, perhaps a left-wing extremist like Mitt Romney, circa 2003.

Romney's actual record in public office seems to have slipped down the memory hole, but soon after Romney became governor in Massachusetts he invested $1.5 million in renewable energy subsidies to a private company called Konarka Technologies, which later went bankrupt. He also directed millions to?Evergreen Solar before it?filed for bankruptcy.

As we discussed in June, as outraged as Romney pretends to be now, as governor he argued public?investments shouldn't be left to free enterprise alone.?Indeed, Romney loved picking winners and losers with public funds -- even when it meant loan guarantees to firms that supported his campaign.

Maybe his "Romnesia" is spreading?

Face to face: It's the final Obama-Romney debate

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) ? Foreign policy took command of the campaign spotlight Monday at the third and final debate between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, two weeks before Election Day in a close race for the White House dominated by pocketbook issues and the economy.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the recent attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and Iran's nuclear ambitions were all ripe for disagreement in the 90-minute event at Lynn University.

Both men spent the weekend in rehearsals, the president at Camp David in Maryland and Romney in Florida. They paid brief visits to the debate hall in the hours before its start.

Obama and Romney are locked in a close race in national opinion polls. For both men, the final days of the long campaign are likely to be a whirlwind of rallies in the far-flung battleground states. Already four million ballots have been cast in early voting in more than two dozen states.

Barring a last-minute change in strategy by one campaign or the other, Obama appears on course to win states and the District of Columbia that account for 237 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory. The same is true for Romney in states with 191 electoral votes.

The battlegrounds account for the remaining 110 electoral votes: Florida (29), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), New Hampshire (4), Iowa (6), Colorado (9), Nevada (6), Ohio (18) and Wisconsin (10).

The televised debate brought no cessation to other campaigning.

Obama's campaign launched a television ad in Florida that said the president ended the war in Iraq and has a plan to do the same in Afghanistan, accusing Romney of opposing him on both. It was not clear how often the ad would air, given the fall's overall focus on the economy.

Vice President Joe Biden, campaigning in Canton, Ohio, emphasized differences between the two candidates on the war in Afghanistan.

"We will leave Afghanistan in 2014, period. They say it depends," he said. "Ladies and gentlemen, like everything with them, it depends. It depends on what day you find these guys."

Romney's running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, was in Colorado. "We are in the midst of deciding the kind of country we're going to be, the kind of people we're going to be, for a generation," he said.

Whatever the outcome of the final face-to-face confrontation, the debates have left an imprint on the race. Romney was widely judged the winner of the first debate over a listless president on Oct. 3, and he has risen in polls in the days since. Obama was much more energetic in the second.

Monday night marked the third time in less than a week that the president and his challenger shared a stage, following the feisty 90-minute town-hall-style meeting last Tuesday on Long Island and a white-tie charity dinner two night later where gracious compliments flowed and barbs dipped in humor flew.

The most memorable exchange of the second debate concerned Libya, and Romney's contention that Obama's administration has responded poorly to an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi last month that killed the ambassador and three other Americans.

As for the Al Smith charity dinner, Obama previewed his all-purpose fallback to criticism on international affairs.

"Spoiler alert: We got bin Laden," he said, a reminder of the signature foreign policy triumph of his term, the death at the hand of U.S. special operations forces of the mastermind behind the terror attacks on the United States more than a decade ago.

The president and his challenger agreed long ago to devote one of their three debates to foreign policy, even though opinion polls show voters care most about economic concerns.

Growth has been slow and unemployment high across Obama's tenure in the White House. Romney, a wealthy former businessman, cites his experience as evidence he will put in place policies that can revive the economy.

In recent weeks, the former Massachusetts governor has stepped up his criticism of the president's handling of international matters, although his campaign hasn't spent any of its television advertising budget on commercials on the subject.

In a speech earlier this month, Romney accused the president of an absence of strong leadership in the Middle East, where popular revolutions have swept away autocratic regimes in Egypt and elsewhere in the past two years. He has also accused Obama of failing to support Israel strongly enough, of failing to make it clear that Iran will not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and of backing cuts in the defense budget that would harm military readiness.

Yet Romney has stumbled several times in attempting to establish his own credentials.

He offended the British when he traveled to England this summer and made comments viewed as critical of their preparation for the Olympic Games.

Democrats pounced when he failed to mention the U.S. troops in Afghanistan or Iraq during his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in late August, and officials in both parties were critical of his comments about the attack in Benghazi while the facts were unknown.

Earlier this fall, a videotape surfaced showing him telling donors "the Palestinians have no interest whatsoever in establishing peace. The pathway to peace is almost unthinkable to accomplish."

Mallya pleased with Force India rise

Force India team principal Vijay Mallya has hailed his squad for stepping up their performances since the summer break.

After picking up 46 points between them during the first 11 races of the season, Nico Hulkenberg and Paul di Resta have added another 40 points to the team?s tally in the last five races.

Although a tad frustrated by their failure not to get both cars in the points regularly, Mallya is delighted with how things have gone in the latter stages of the campaign.

?It certainly feels like we have upped our game since the summer break and it has been satisfying to see us up there fighting for good points,? he said.

?The only frustration is that we have not always managed to get two cars in the points and that has hurt us in the Championship. But in terms of outright performance, I think we can be pleased with our level of consistency.

?We?ve had at least one car in the top ten of qualifying in over 80 per cent of the races and scored points in 75 per cent of the races.

?While we may not have finished on the podium this year, it is our consistency that has been key to our success and kept us in the fight.?

British 'Psychic' Goes All Peter Popoff | Dispatches from the Culture ...

A British ?psychic? named Anne Germain has apparently been caught doing what faith-healing fraud Peter Popoff did when James Randi caught him in the mid-80s, using questionnaires and an in-ear receiver to give her information about the people in the audience she was conning. Citing a Spanish newspaper report, the Daily Mirror says:

It says it has seen copies of briefs prepared for Mrs Germain and allegedly handed to her before she met members of the crowd at her ?60-a-ticket packed live shows and on her TV series.

In one encounter, it is claimed ?spiritual medium? Mrs Germain had a dossier saying one audience member had worked at the family?s pottery business.

A section headed ?deceased loved ones?, informed Mrs Germain of the name and age of the person?s relative as well as how they died.

In the subsequent show, the medium claimed to be communicating with the deceased and told the person: ?She is showing different pots, plates and glasses.?

Mrs Germain, who uses a translator at her shows in Spain, confirmed to The People this week that dossiers had been prepared for her ahead of her events.

Popoff?s version of this was to have people coming to his faith-healing services fill out prayer request cards, which he then had his wife read to him through a receiver in his ear that the audience could not see.

Project Eternity is Most Funded Gaming Project on Kickstarter

Project Eternity's managed to set Kickstarter records.

Project Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment's throwback game to the days of isometric RPGs of olde, closed its fundraising period on Kickstarter just shy of $4 million at $3,986,929. Had backers managed to push the project to the big $4 mil, Obsidian would have included live instrumentation for the score and developer commentary. The last $500K, Obsidian claimed, would be used to "enhance the game."

Unfortunately, Obsidian was a mere $13.1K from that goal.

However, Eternity's managed to push videogame funding on Kickstarter to new heights. It's managed to dethrone Double Fine as the most funded videogame project of all time on Kickstarter (discounting the OUYA, which we'll consider hardware.) The previous record holder, Double Fine Adventure, held the record at $3.3 million.

Project Eternity backers shouldn't expect the game anywhere in the near future. Obsidian's currently got its hands full with other projects, including the THQ-published South Park RPG and inXile's Kickstarter-backed project Wasteland 2. Eternity's Kickstarter page lists its release date as April 2014, but backers shouldn't be too surprised if that release date ends up getting pushed back more than a tad in the future.

Make Tea from Apple Peels

Make Tea from Apple PeelsIt's Fall and apples appear in many seasonal foods. While you're peeling apples for pies, applesauce, and other dishes save some peelings to make a tasty herbal tea.

Culinary weblog The Kitchn notes that this isn't technically a tea but a tisane. Popular tisanes such as chamomile or mint are called herbal teas but that term technically only applies to mixtures of both tea leaves and other herbs.

To make the apple tisane simply simmer a handful of apple peels in a saucepan for five to ten minutes. This has the side benefit of making your house smell wonderful, particularly if you add a stick of cinnamon.
