Saturday storm uproots 42 trees at Marengo Ridge Golf Club

MARENGO ? The Marengo Ridge Golf Club lost 42 trees when strong winds and heavy rainfall rolled through the area Saturday night.

The large number of uprooted trees, located along the club's back nine, forced staffers to close that portion of the 18-hole course to golfers on Sunday. The back nine was reopened Monday, but the cleanup effort is continuing.

Owner Bob Witek estimated that the damage could cost the club up to $10,000, but he still is researching potential bidders to replace the damaged trees, some of which date to when the club opened in 1963.

The storms developed quickly Saturday night around 7 p.m., Witek said, rolling through with heavy winds and rainfall that were causing cars in the club's parking lot to shake.

"You couldn't see through the windows of the club," he said.
