Aboard his Yamaha YFZ450R, Chad Wienen powered to 2-1 moto finishes to claim his sixth overall win of the year at Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Mich. on Saturday, July 28. The convincing win extends Wienen?s lead to 36 points over John Natalie, his closest rival in the championship, who finished third overall with 1-6 moto results. Meanwhile Wienen?s teammate Thomas Brown put in a solid effort over the weekend to take fourth overall with 3-4 moto finishes. Brown rides fifth in the championship with nine of 10 rounds now completed.
In the first moto, Natalie took the early lead with Brown closely behind and Wienen trapped back in sixth ? a tough spot to be in a Pro ATV motocross race. Brown then moved his YFZ into the lead on the second of 11 laps and held it until lap four as Wienen began to work his way forward. While Natalie was busy reclaiming the lead from Brown, Wienen was really on a charge, already up to third and setting his sights on Brown in second. However Brown wasn?t through fighting, and it took Wienen until the next-to-last lap to move past his teammate to grab second place and put himself in position for the overall victory. But it would take winning the next moto to get the job done.
In the second moto, Brown again started second ? this time behind rival Josh Upperman ? with Wienen much closer to the front in third place. Wienen advanced into second on lap two as Brown dropped to fourth, and that?s all it took for Wienen to next set his sights on Upperman and pass him for the lead at the halfway point. From that point until the finish, Wienen built up a small margin over Upperman and was able to hold on for the win. All Wienen has to do now is produce a good result at the series finale in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Aug. 11-12 to claim the 2012 AMA Pro ATV championship.
