Judge orders woman tried in grandson's gun death

BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) ? A 74-year-old Michigan woman will stand trial on murder and firearms charges in the shooting of her 17-year-old grandson at their suburban Detroit condominium.

The Bloomfield Township judge's ruling Monday means Sandra Layne faces up to life in prison if convicted.

She's accused of repeatedly shooting Jonathan Hoffman on May 18 at the West Bloomfield Township home she and her husband shared with their grandson.

In testimony Monday, a police officer said Layne came out of their condo with her hands raised and screamed, "I murdered my grandson."

Officer Derrick Kassab says Layne was hysterical as she surrendered to officers.

Prosecutors also played a 911 tape in which Jonathan says his grandmother shot him and that he was "going to die."
