For months, a family in Gilbert, Arizona has been enduring attacks of increasing danger. According to The Raw Story:
It began with profane graffiti on cars and the street outside the home. Then the perpetrators began setting bushes on fire, including one right up against the stucco house. Next, someone began banging on doors and even their disabled daughter?s window. And then last week, the house was broken into and profanity was scrawled in the kitchen and several of the children?s rooms.
These attacks have not happened to any other neighborhood families. But this family is unusual in the area: the parents are two gay dads.
Felix Bermea and his partner, Roy, believe they are being targeted for being a minority family in the neighborhood. Bermea is concerned that the police have not acted with enough concern or speed in helping the family, and worries that authorities care less than they might if the situation involved a white, heterosexual family like the majority of their neighbors.
While they wait for the police to stop what they call ?terrorism? against their family, Bermea and his partner have become the focus of a campaign to at least get them a little vacation from the stress of the situation.
The Family Equality Council, sponsor of the annual ?Family Week? in Provincetown, Massachusetts, is raising funds to send Felix, Roy and their four kids to the event, from July 28 to August 4.
I?ve been to Family Week in Provincetown and can vouch that it is fun for all ages. It?s a wonderland of queer parents and their kids, families that come in all colors and configurations. If ever there was a place where the Bermea family could not just temporarily escape their troubles, but perhaps exchange experience and ideas with others who?ve been in similar situations, it?s Family Week.
Not to mention, if kids ever deserved a little time at the beach, the Bermea kids do!
