Ivers to help lead Iowans at GOP national convention

Drew Ivers has some experience with Republican National Conventions.

The Webster City man has attended five of them, and this year he will be going to a sixth in a leadership role with the Iowa delegation.

Ivers was elected chairman of the state's group headed to the August gathering in Tampa, Fla., during the past weekend's Republican State Convention in Des Moines.

"It's something that I'm pleased to do under the auspices of fulfilling my duty as a citizen participating in the political process so we can govern ourselves," he said. "I hope that, especially for young people, I'm setting something of an example."

"I am not doing this for glory, entertainment or any other motive," he added.

Gov. Terry Branstad will be the leader of the delegation and will serve as its spokesman, according to Ivers. He said his own role will be "more in the background handling administrative chores.

Ivers said he probably was elected the delegations chairman because "I've got some experience at it."

He has attended national conventions in 1980 at Detroit, Mich.; in 1988 at New Orleans, La.; in 1992 at Houston, Texas; in 1996 at San Diego, Calif.; and in 2008 at Minneapolis, Minn.
