Forwarding Old Email Accounts to Gmail

The old AOL account is a classic remnant of booming 1990s Internet. If you're not ready to part with it, you don't have to: Gmail (and many other email services) can keep track of it for you. Almost all email services offer the Post Office Protocol (POP) standard, which lets email programs get messages from a server. In this case, you won't be using an email program, but instead an email service (Gmail) to get those messages from AOL's servers. In Gmail settings, add your AOL address to Check Mail From Other Accounts. For once-popular services such as AOL, Gmail will likely be able to fill in the server information for you; for others, check with the service to get its POP server. When you enter it to Gmail, make sure you select the option to use SSL encryption to protect your account. If you want to be able to send mail from your AOL account via Gmail, you'll need to add it in the Send Mail As section; Gmail then sends an email to your AOL account with a link for you to confirm that you do indeed want Gmail to let you send mail from that AOL address.

To consolidate accounts into a single account hosted by Outlook, Yahoo, or others, the process is basically the same. If you're just trying to consolidate AOL, Gmail, iCloud, or Yahoo accounts and you're sick of Gmail's drab gray interface, you have yet another option: Alto. The new service?from AOL!?is essentially a skin for compatible email accounts. Log in with your AOL account info, and the service displays all your messages and groups emails by type?those with attachments, those with photos, and so on. The clean interface is refreshing but, unfortunately, not quite public; the site is still in private beta, so you'll need to request an invite. When you sign in to Alto using a Gmail account, the site requests access to the account and imports all your mail, letting you send and receive from a completely different interface. If you decide Alto's not for you, stay safe and revoke its access to your Gmail account in security settings. That way, you won't accidentally stay logged in to Gmail through Alto even after you've signed out of Gmail.com.
