A Detailed History Of Fitness Equipment

Many health and fitness conscious consumers know a thing or two about fitness equipment. After all, these machines help you get into shape from the convenience of your own home or local gym. But, what many used fitness equipment users don?t know is how the fitness industry took off with such inventive solutions.

The Assembly Of The First Treadmill

The first remarkable fitness equipment to be developed was the treadmill, bursting its way to the scene in 1875. During that time, the machine wasn?t quite ready for use of walking and/or running, but was actually used in the production line process in many factories.

In fact, Ford Motors was the first to use the treadmill belt on the conveyor line to speed up mass assembles in the 1920s.

Humans Take The Treadmill To Task

The 1950?s proved to be a monumental moment when a doctor at the University of Washington in Seattle by the name Robert A. Bruce used the treadmill or conveyor belt for humans to walk as a stress test. Folks that were tested has electrodes placed on their body that ran to an electrocardiograph. It was able to monitor strict vital signs when speed of the treadmill increased in order to defect any heart issues that may reside. However, the belt was seen more as exercise equipment to increase someone?s heart rate verse a stress test machine.

It wasn?t until 10 years later, during the 1960s that the treadmill machine was launched by Tunturi, a prominent manufacturer of exercise equipment.

Taking A Tour Of The Rise Of The Stationary Bike

About 20 years following the treadmill, Jonathan Goldberg created indoor cycling and the use of stationary bicycles. These stationary bikes allow you to perform the same motions as you would outside. Cycling soon became what we all know now as spinning, as developed by a later company founded by Goldberg and John Baudhuin called Mad Dogg Athletics, Inc.

Stepping Up With The StairMaster

In about 1983 Lanny Potts invented the StairMaster which had it first premier at a National Sporting Goods Association show under Tri-Tech Inc. During the 1990?s, the elliptical made its way to the fitness equipment club and provided added benefits to the user by working both legs and arms in the same breath.

Today, people are still using fitness equipment and the machines keep proceeding to get even more technologically advanced with heart rate monitors, power inclines, MP3 players, built-in programs and shock absorption. Each machine has become greatly recognized as one of the highest level machines to provide a well-round workout for burning calories and trimming fat.
