Last week, I wrote an article for theGrio entitled ?4 half-truths about black-owned businesses and why you should still buy black?.?Although it is important to have the support of the black community when starting a black business, it is time for black businesses to step up as well. It is true that there has been a history of oppression from others in this country. However, that is a sunk cost which is a cost that has already occurred and cannot be recovered. These costs should not factor into decision-making about the future of African-American commerce.

This article on customer service is the first of a series of articles that will share my thoughts on how black businesses can improve to become world class organizations. It is time for us to move forward, create a great business roadmap, and execute it to perfection.

Improving Our Customer Service

There is a very negative stigma customers hold regarding black-owned businesses having poor customer service. Although this is definitely not true for many black businesses, it is an area in which we need to pay special attention. Due to the negative stigma, customer service has become a critical success factor?(CSF) if a business is black-owned. Not all attributes of a company (i.e. customer service, prices, quality, etc.) are weighted equally in the minds of consumers; CSFs are those things that need to be excellent in order to build a sustainable customer base. Delighting customers does three things for your business:

1. It increases the number of referrals to your business as happy customers are likely to give good suggestions to their friends. This lowers the acquisition cost of each new customer.
2. It helps you retain your current customers longer as they will want to user your service multiple times. This increases your customer lifetime value.
3. It reduces the number of people saying negative things about your company. One of the worst things that can happen for a small business is an angry, vocal customer who knows how to use the Internet. If you are not careful, your reputation can be ruined on feedback sites like Yelp.

The Ultimate Question of Good Customer Service

It is one thing to say that customer service needs to be improved, but what does this really mean? Salesforce.com has an excellent video explaining the attributes of great customer service. Ultimately, it comes down to one question: ?As a customer, how satisfied were you using this product or service?? If the answer is ?very satisfied,? then you have a great likelihood of retaining that customer for future business. If it is less than that, it is important to collect feedback on what you can do better. Common actions that make a good customer experience are speed of service and ?personable and helpful interaction with the customer over the phone or in person. Focus on these things and never forget this ultimate question that you need to keep in mind.

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Prosecutors in northern Mexico say a man wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun robbed two theaters showing the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises."

The spokesman for prosecutors in the border state of Chihuahua said Monday the man went to the ticket booths and demanded the ticket money. Spokesman Carlos Gonzalez said the man was dressed in black.

No injuries were reported in the Sunday robberies. The shows apparently went on.

Showings of the movie have been accompanied by heightened security concerns after a gunman opened fire in a theater in Colorado in July, killing 12 and injuring dozens.

In late July, people were evacuated from a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in western Mexico after a fire broke out in a garbage container outside the theater.

Camouflage of moths: Moths actively seek out best hiding places

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Moths are iconic examples of camouflage. Their wing coloration and patterns are shaped by natural selection to match the patterns of natural substrates, such as a tree bark or leaves, on which the moths rest. But, according to recent findings, the match in the appearance was not all in their invisibility.

Despite a long history of research on these iconic insects, whether moths behave in a way to increase their invisibility has not been determined. A research team from the Laboratory of Behavioral Ecology and Evolution at the Seoul National University has conducted an experiment to directly answer this question. Chang-ku Kang, Jong-yeol Moon, Sang-im Lee and Piotr Jablonski have found out that moths walk on the tree bark until they settle down to rest; the insects seem to actively search for a place and a body position that makes them practically invisible.

Instead of placing moth specimens on a tree bark in various positions to see how body orientation of moths make them invisible to birds, which has been done by several researchers, "we let the moths to do the job for us" says Changku Kang, the PhD student who conducted the experiment. The researchers let inchworm moths of two species (Jankowskia fuscaria and Hypomycis roboraria) land on tree bark and freely choose the final resting spot and body orientation. Many moths did not remain at the spot of landing. They walked around with stretched wings as if they were looking for that one perfect spot that may make them invisible to predators.

To determine whether this final spot indeed made the moth really invisible, the researchers photographed each moth at its landing spot (initial spot) and at the final spot at which the moth decided to rest. Next, the researchers asked people to try to locate the moth from the photograph as quickly as possible. People had more difficulty finding the moths at their final spots than the same moths at their initial landing spots.

Amazingly, this was even true for the species (Hypomecis roboraria) that only changed its resting spot on the tree bark without changing its body orientation. Therefore, the researchers concluded, that moths seems to actively choose the spot that makes them invisible to predators. How do they know how to become invisible? The research team is now trying to answer this question as the next step.

SBA Proposes Changes to Small Business Size Standards for NAICS

The U.S. Small Business Administration (?SBA?) recently issued one Proposed Rule seeking to revise the small business size standards for 9 industries in NAICS Sector 22, ?Utilities,? Small Business Size Standards: Utilities, 77 Fed. Reg. 42,441 (July 19, 2012), and another proposing the revision of size standards for 1 industry and 1 sub-industry in NAICS Sector 22, ?Construction,? Small Business Size Standards: Construction, 77 Fed. Reg. 42,197 (July 18, 2012).? The proposed adjustments relating to the Construction sector are very modest and unlikely to have significant impact.? But those proposed for the Utilities sector include increased size standards for 3 industries and the adoption of employee based size standards in the place of the current million megawatt hours (MWh) standards for 6 others.?

Comments on both proposed rules are due on September 17, 2012. ?

The proposed size standard increases promise to enable formerly small companies to once again qualify and compete as small businesses for new procurement opportunities in these industries.? If adopted, they also will expand the pool of qualified small businesses with which large companies can contract under their small business subcontracting plans.? And businesses working in the Utilities sector industries impacted by the proposed switch to employee based standards will have to learn an entirely new approach to determining size.? It therefore will behoove all businesses, both large and small, involved with these industries, to familiarize themselves with these proposed changes to the size standards and develop and timely submit comments if they wish to help shape the SBA?s decision on final rules for these sectors.?

As previously noted in articles here and here relating to size standards, SBA?s size standards are set forth in 13 C.F.R. Part 121.? Starting in 2007, SBA began a comprehensive review of its size standards.? This effort has taken on increased impetus in view of the mandate in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010, Pub. L. No. 111-240, signed September 27, 2010, directing SBA to conduct a detailed review of all size standards and to make appropriate adjustments to reflect market conditions.? SBA is now required to conduct a detailed review of at least one-third of all size standards during every 18-month period, and to do a complete review of all size standards no less frequently than every five years.? The proposed rules for Sectors 22 and 23 are part of that ongoing process.

Applying its ?Size Standard Methodology,? SBA calculated new, higher size standards for the three non-electric industry NAICS Codes in Sector 22.? As a result, it proposes to raise NAICS Code 221310 (Water Supply and Irrigation Systems) from $7.0M to $25.5M, NAICS Code 221320 (Sewage Treatment Facilities) from $7.0M to $19.0M, and NAICS code 221330 (Steam and Air-Conditioning Supply) from $12.5M to $14.0M.? SBA conducted a more extensive evaluation of the Electric Utilities industries (NAICS Codes 221111 to 221122) and its approach to their size standards.? Currently, in order to be considered ?small? within these industries, firms, including their affiliates, must be primarily engaged in the generation, transmission and/or distribution of electric energy, see Footnote 1 in 13 CFR ? 121.201, and its total electric output for the preceding fiscal year must not exceed 4 MWh.? In preparing the proposed rule, SBA considered three options for changing the size standard: (1) increasing the current MWh based size standard from 4 million MWh to 8 million MWh and modifying Footnote 1; (2) adding an employee based size standard of 500 employees along with an 8 million MWh size standard and eliminating Footnote 1; and (3) replacing the current 4 million MWh size standard with an employee based size standard of 500 employees and eliminating Footnote 1.? After extensive discussion, SBA announced its strong preference for the third option, which it stated would avoid the complications of trying to apply Footnote 1 while taking advantage of the simpler, more consistent, and more appropriate employee based approach.? Click here to see SBA?s Table 3, summarizing the resulting proposed size standards for NAICS Sector 22.

The proposed changes to size standards in the Sector 23, ?Construction,? are not nearly as extensive, although they would been if based solely on the numbers.? Using its Size Standard Methodology, SBA calculated standards for each NAICS Code in the Sector and found that many of them were lower than the corresponding current size standard.? SBA obtained similar results when it calculated common size standards (which it proposes to use as an alternative to separate size standards for each industry in situations where the same businesses operate in multiple industries).? Each of the three common size standards calculated and proposed for use ? for subsectors 236 (Construction of Buildings) and 238 (Specialty Trade Contractors) and industry group 2371 (Utility System Construction) ? were lower than the current standards for their constituent NAICS Codes.? Click here to see SBA?s Table 6, summarizing these size standards calculations for NAICS Sector 23.? However, because lowering size standards is inconsistent with Government efforts to stimulate the economy and would discourage job growth, SBA is not proposing the reduction of any size standards.? Instead, the only proposed changes are to increase size standards for two NAICS codes not subject to common size standards: raising NAICS Code 237210 (Land Subdivision) from $7.0M to $25.5M and the Dredging and Surface Cleanup Activities exception to NAICS Code 237990 (Other Heavy and Civil Engineering Construction) from $20.0M to $30.0M.?

Both proposed rules identify a number of issues on which SBA seeks comments, including its specific proposed changes to size standards, its use of eight fixed levels for receipts based size standards, and the propriety of using common size standards. ??

As explained in our previous blogs on this general topic, it is important to note the reviews reflected in these proposed rules do not include the impact of inflation, and SBA will consider such separately, once its current ongoing review of all size standards is completed, so as to apply such equally across-the-board to all industries at the same time.

Elusive gene that causes a form of blindness from birth dlscovered

ScienceDaily (July 29, 2012) ? Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division and their collaborators have isolated an elusive human gene that causes a common form of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a relatively rare but devastating form of early-onset blindness. The new LCA gene is called NMNAT1. Finding the specific gene mutated in patients with LCA is the first step towards developing sight-saving gene therapy.

LCA is an inherited retinal degenerative disease characterized by reduced vision in infancy. Within the first few months of life, parents usually notice a lack of visual responsiveness and unusual roving eye movements known as nystagmus. LCA typically involves only vision problems, but can be accompanied by disease in other organ systems in a minority of patients. LCA is a common reason children are enrolled in schools for the blind.

"The immediate benefit of this discovery is that affected patients with mutations in this new LCA gene now know the cause of their condition," said Eric Pierce, M.D., Ph.D., co-senior author and director of the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass. Eye and Ear. "Scientists now have another piece to the puzzle as to why some children are born with LCA and decreased vision. The long-term goal of our research is to develop therapies to limit or prevent vision loss from these disorders."

NMNAT1 is the 18th identified LCA gene. The gene resides in a region that was known to harbor an LCA gene since 2003, but the specific disease gene has been undiscovered until now. These findings will be published on July 29 in the online edition of Nature Genetics.

To identify NMNAT1, scientists performed whole exome sequencing of the family of two siblings who initially presented for evaluation of LCA but who had no mutations in any of the known LCA genes. Being seen by a multi-disciplinary team that took the case from careful clinical characterization to genetic testing to the research laboratory was an essential ingredient for success.

"By using whole exome sequencing, we found a mutation in a gene that no one could have predicted would be associated with LCA," said Dr. Pierce.

"Whereas most of the known LCA genes involve dysfunction of retinal ciliary proteins necessary for light detection in the eye, NMNAT1 is uniquely distinguished by being the first metabolic enzyme linked to LCA," said Marni J. Falk, M.D., co-first author and Clinical Geneticist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Having found a mutation in NMNAT1 in this one family, the investigators next asked if mutations in NMNAT1 also cause disease in other patients with LCA. Screening of 284 unrelated patients with LCA from the United States, England, France and India allowed them to identify 13 other patients with mutations in NMNAT1 as the cause of their disease.

Drs. Falk, Pierce and colleagues also studied how the identified mutations in NMNAT1 affect the function of the NMNAT1 protein, and thus may cause dysfunction and death of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina. Working together with Eiko Nakamaru-Ogiso, Ph.D., in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at The University of Pennsylvania, they found that mutations in NMNAT1 appear to decrease the ability of the NMNAT1 protein to produce NAD+, a key mediator of cellular signaling and energetics.

Early treatment for patients with NMNAT1-related LCA could be especially beneficial.

Researchers found that all but the youngest patient with NMNAT1 mutations had damage to the macula, the center of the retina that is needed for central vision. "This 4-year-old girl who doesn't have central vision loss yet can possibly benefit substantially if we can devise a therapy for her NMNAT1-mediated LCA that prevents her from developing severe central vision loss," Dr. Pierce said.

Rally in Rome Spotlights Christian Persecution

As Christians face the threat of violent persecution in Syria, Nigeria, and other countries, speakers at a rally in Rome called on governments to explicitly condemn the violence, and to grant the persecuted full refugee status.

Called "Salviamo i Cristiani" -- Save the Christians -- the demonstration on July 18 highlighted that, globally, no other group is more persecuted.

The organizers noted that during the course of history, an estimated 70 million Christians have been martyred for their faith, including 40 million in the 20th century alone. They said, each year, 105,000 Christians die as martyrs -- one new martyr every minute -- killed by Islamic terrorists, Hindus in India, or communists in China, North Korea and Vietnam.

"We're told about a triumph of democracy and peace," said Roberto de Mattei of the Lepanto Foundation, a non-profit organization defending the principles and institutions of Western Christian civilization.

"After Sept. 11, they said, Don't worry, because the politics of dialogue and interreligious peace will prevail. Today, we're told about the health of the Maghreb, that it is a model of the Arab Spring, showing hope and promise," the Italian historian said. "But the reality of what is before our eyes is tragically different. Today, we are here to cry out our indignation, and launch our appeal for persecuted Christians."

In a July 25 interview with Aid to the Church in Need, a Christian charity, the Catholic bishop of Aleppo said fear was widespread that Christians there will be attacked. "If they come in around our churches and round our bishopric, just as they did in Homs, it will be disastrous for us," said Jesuit Bishop Antoine Audo. "What can we do to protect the people? We do not have any possibility to do that."

A message from German observers of the Knights of Malta, a Catholic charity, reported July 25 that thousands of Christians were fleeing Syria "not just because of the violence of civil conflict but because they are suffering from attacks by the rebel forces, elements of which are radically Muslim."

Magdi Cristiano Allam, an Egyptian-born Italian politician who was received into the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008, used his address at last week's rally to call on all governments to offer full refugee status to persecuted Christians.

He noted that around the end of the seventh century, 95 percent of the populations on the southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean were Christian; today they make up just 6 percent of the population, numbering 12 million people. That figure is expected to halve by 2020. "Only if we are strong and certain of our roots, faith, and values can we be respected," he said.

Asked why governments and the media tend to ignore the plight of persecuted Christians worldwide, Allam told Newsmax it was because they are afraid of Islam and too preoccupied with finance and materialism.

He also criticized President Obama for playing "a fundamental role in the legitimization of radical Islam." As examples, he cited the administration's negotiations with the Taliban in Afghanistan and Obama's use of Koranic verses to portray Islam as a moderate religion during his speech in Cairo in 2009.

The rally speakers also noted that Christians not only face violent persecution but also subtler forms in the guise of growing restrictions to religious freedom.

Asked about the Obama administration's threats to the religious liberty of U.S. Catholics, Allam said: "Obama is undoubtedly an expression of relativism, as we have seen recently in his support for same-sex marriage, his support for abortion." He added: "[Obama] is a person who wants nothing to do with anyone who puts the person at the centre -- the natural family, local communities, values, rules for the common good. Obama represents a danger for our civilization."

De Mattei acknowledged that in view of Christians' countercultural witness to the world, persecution is to be expected. But he also stressed that it should be confronted. "The Church has lived with persecution since its origins, also during communism, but the persecutors are bad and we have to resist, to fight," he said.

Despite Rome being the home of Catholicism, with many monuments to martyrs who died in hatred of the faith over the centuries, the rally only drew about 300 people. But Rome's mayor, Gianni Alemanno, described the event as having "extraordinary importance" and argued that religious freedom should be placed above an emphasis on other civil and political rights.

Kidney cancer vaccine successful in clinical trials

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of T?bingen and immatics biotechnologies GmbH -- a start-up by T?bingen scientists -- have published the results of two clinical studies using the kidney-cancer vaccine IMA901 in the latest edition of Nature Medicine.

IMA901 is used to treat patients with cancer of the kidneys. It is composed of ten synthetic tumor-associated peptides (TUMAPs), which activate the body's own killer T-cells against the tumor. Unlike chemotherapy, this process targets the body's immune responses and mobilizes them to attack the cancer. The studies show that this active immunization against cancer can be successful and extend the life of a patient for longer than even the latest chemotherapy techniques -- with far fewer side-effects.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Rammensee, head of Immunology at the University of T?bingen and co-founder of immatics biotechnologies, says: "This work is a milestone in the development of cancer immune therapies. The principle applied here -- of active immunization against cancer antigens previously identified in cancer cells -- can be used against practically all types of cancer. University of T?bingen researchers have published similarly successful clinical studies in the case of bowel cancer, also in collaboration with immatics, and prostate cancer. Immatics is currently carrying out studies on treatments for glioblastoma [a common and malignant brain tumor] and further studies for treating liver cancer and ovarian carcinoma are in the pipeline."

Prof. Dr. Arnulf Stenzl, head of Urology at the University Hospitals, who supervised the clinical studies, explains: "All of the medications previously used have brought about a clear improvement in reducing tumor growth in cancer of the kidneys, but they did not lead to the desired extension of the patient's life and certainly did not cure the patient. So from the clinical point of view, the further development by immatics of active immunization in combination with a low dose of one-off chemotherapy is a significant step in the treatment of kidney cell carcinoma -- and possibly other malignant tumors as well."

One particular aspect of this kidney cancer study is its uniquely exhaustive analysis of the immune response against the cancer antigens -- done with the help of biomarkers. In particular, the characteristics of the white blood cells involved were precisely detailed during the course of the immunization. Complex logistics were required to get these cells frozen and transported to T?bingen from study centers all over Europe, while ensuring they were in a fit state to be analyzed.

The study shows that in kidney-cancer patients with documented T-cell reactions against two or more tumor-associated peptides, the immune reaction and clinical progress were clearly linked. That confirms the hypothesis that cancer treatments can be further developed by broadly activating the immune system against various target structures on the surface of the tumor. The article also describes the researchers' aims of identifying biomarkers which could help give a more accurate prediction of how long certain groups of patients may live after being treated with IMA901. Twitter bomb joke conviction overturned

A British man who joked on Twitter that he would blow up an airport after it closed because of snow has had his conviction for sending a "menacing" message overturned in a landmark ruling for users of social media websites.

Paul Chambers, 28, had sent the message in what he called a moment of frustration at not being able to catch a flight from Doncaster Robin Hood airport.

He had later been arrested and sentenced but the High Court on Friday upheld his appeal against conviction.

Speaking outside the court afterwards, Chambers' lawyer John Cooper, who had argued it was wrong to associate the tweet with terrorism, said it was a milestone ruling.

"It's a very big decision both nationally and internationally for hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who use Facebook and Twitter," he told the BBC.

"It means that if you intend to make a joke and if what you do is a joke, however bad a joke that is, you cannot be prosecuted," he added.

The case revolved around a tweet sent by Chambers to a friend in January 2010, which read: "Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!"

Chambers said he sent the tweet to his 600 followers in a moment of frustration and never imagined it would be taken seriously.

"It was surreal. My world became something else," he said when asked how he felt when he was arrested.

Of Friday's ruling he added: "It's an important decision as far as social networks are concerned and as far as Twitter is concerned.

"It has established that there has to be an action that is menacing and is intended to be menacing."

Chambers' case gained the attention and support of thousands of Twitter users and several high-profile British comedians.

In Friday's High Court ruling, three judges headed by the Lord Chief Justice Lord Judge, allowed Chambers' appeal against a Crown Court judge's decision upholding the 2010 conviction.

They said: "If the person or persons who receive or read it, (the message) or may reasonably be expected to receive, or read it, would brush it aside as a silly joke, or a joke in bad taste, or empty bombastic or ridiculous banter, then it would be a contradiction in terms to describe it as a message of a menacing character."

Daley hopes China's divers will crack

Britain's teenage star Tom Daley is hoping China's divers will crack under pressure at the London Olympics as he seeks to break the dominance of the "Dream Team" on home soil.

The 18-year-old kicks off his London programme alongside partner Peter Waterfield in the men's synchronised platform on Monday, and follows up with the individual platform on August 10 at London's Aquatic Centre.

China won all 10 diving medals at last year's Shanghai world championships, and since they returned to the Olympics in 1984, Chinese divers have claimed 27 out of 40 gold medals. Eight are on offer in London.

However, Daley insists China -- including his awesome 10m platform rival Qiu Bo, whom he recently described as a "robot" -- are beatable.

"Normally in diving, silver is gold, because the Chinese dominate everything," said Daley, who made his Olympic debut in China four years ago as a 14-year-old schoolboy.

"But you never know what happens in an Olympic Games. Take Athens in 2004 for example, the Greek pair only qualified because they were hosts.

"China failed their dive in the last round, then Russia were favourites, but one of them hit the board, then the Americans messed their dive up and Greece won Olympic gold.

"We have all seen the YouTube videos of speed skaters crashing on the last corner (at Winter Olympics) and the last man standing wins, you don't know what will happen."

Having won the world platform title in Rome in 2009, Daley was beaten by China's 19-year-old diving star Qiu in Shanghai last year. The Briton had lost his father to cancer just months earlier.

Daley is relishing another showdown having finished fifth in Shanghai while reigning champion Matt Mitcham of Australia, whose gold in Beijing denied China clean sweep of eight Olympic titles, is also sure to challenge.

"Qiu Bo has been unbeaten for the last few years individually, but I have learnt all of his dives and we have the same level of difficulty," said Daley, who won platform and synchro golds at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

"It is about who is going to perform the best on the day, I am going to go out there and do my best as he will.

"It's about trying to produce the best six dives of our lives."

Mitcham is battling back from an abdominal muscle injury and says the spotlight on Daley and Bo has taken the pressure off him.

"I feel quite grateful," Mitcham said. "Because of all these injuries, a lot of expectation has been lifted off me.

"People underestimate how much it can affect you having the weight of expectation. Some athletes deal with that better than others."

July 25 Action Stopped Kosovo&#39;s Partition, Minister Says :: Balkan ...

Kosovo?s Interior Minister has paid tribute to the police intervention in July 2011 in the Serb-run north, saying it sent a clear message that Pristina will not allow the partition of Kosovo.

Bajram Rexhepi said on Thursday that since July 25, 2011, Kosovo had asserted its authority over the northern border crossings in Jarinje and Bernjak, which NATO peacekeepers in KFOR had controlled since the country seceded from Serbia.

?July 25 [2011] was the biggest action since post-1999 war, which has taken off the [negotiating] table speculation about the eventual partition of Kosovo,? Rexhepi asserted.

?Since July 25, our institutions have been present 24 hours a day at the gates," he added.

"Progress in the north is a process that goes on gradually. You can?t seize full control with one or two actions. It?s a complex process, which needs full implementation of the rule of law,? Rexhepi continued.

The Interior Minister, followed by the Kosovo Police Director Shpend Maxhuni, and other police officers, paid tribute to the police officer who died in the July 2011 action.

The Kosovo government sent special police forces to take control of the two border crossings to enforce sanctions on products made in Serbia, as a reciprocal measure to the ban on the export of goods from Kosovo to Serbia.

But northern Serbs saw the Kosovo Police action as a provocation and major unrest followed.

Police officer Enver Zymberi was killed in a confrontation while his team was pulling back from Jarinje and Brnjak, following an agreement between Pristina, Belgrade and NATO peackeepers in KFOR to calm tensions.

Two days later, a Kosovo Serbian mob torched the border gate in Jarinje and shot at NATO peacekeepers. Six Kosovo Serbs are wanted for Zymberi's death. None has been arrested.

Since the action, tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have remained high. A year on, the situation is largely unchanged, with local Serbs continuing to block major roads in the region.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Since then 89 states, including 22 EU member states and the US, have recognized the country.

But Serbia does not recognise the country and continues to insist that Kosovo is a province of Serbia.

Meanwhile, the north remains under the de-facto control of so-called parallel institutions funded by Belgrade. These include town councils, health authorities, post offices and schools.

According to a Kosovo government report from 2011, Serbian security structures have remained continually present in the north since 1999.

These include men from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, MUP, various other police departments, the State Intelligence service, BIA, the military intelligence service, VBA, and others.

I have substituted organization or nonprofit or donor where he refers to customers, competitors, business. Note: My changes/notes in?italics, bold emphasis also mine.

Seth writes:

An organization (read nonprofit) with feet on the street and alert and regular attention to detail can build more trust and develop better relationships than one than hits and runs.?Now it that isn?t a description of great nonprofit engagement, I don?t know what is.?

• Contact every user?donor who stops using?giving to your service?nonprofit and find out why.
• Create a newsletter for every journalist who covers your space, and deliver it every three weeks, even when you?re not asking for anything. Just to keep them in the loop.?We always talk about engagement without asking for anything. This applies to the fourth estate as well.?
• Eagerly pay attention to people donors, activists?who mention you online and engage with them in a way that they prefer to be engaged.
• Sponsor/Participate in?industry events and actually show up.
• Write a thank you note every single day, to someone who doesn?t expect one.?Donors, prospects, volunteers, activists ? NOTES not email even to those who are mostly online. Fill their mailbox with love!
• Build your permission asset (See Seth?s blog on this.)?by 1% every day. Every day, 1% more people/donors/volunteers/prospects/activists?are eager and happy to hear from you.
• Write a blog every day, not to sell, but to teach.
• Connect people in your industry, because you enjoy it.?See Brian Uzzi on being a network broker!
• Host community meetings in your store?nonprofit organization.
• Put a lemonade stand in front of your business nonprofit?and let the local kids donate raise?the money awareness for your organization?to whatever charity they like.
• Hand out free samples every chance you have.?Share share share.
• Keep in touch with people/donors/volunteers who used to work with you and continue to help them get great gigs and new business, even years later.
• Put together an honest buyer?s guide, pointing out in which instances your competitor?s products are a better choice.?Ok will have to think on this one a bit relative to the third sector. But collaboration comes to mind immediately.
• Run classes for your customers?donors/volunteers/activists.
• Run classes for your competitors.?Collaborate on leadership training.
• Build a recruiting pipeline that is in place more than a year before you need to hire someone. YES! Volunteers, donors, Board members can and are a part of that pipeline.

None of this is sufficient. Your product mission, programs?and your strategy have to be brilliant. But a lot of it is necessary. Hearts and minds?
