Gate the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering is an all India base competitive exam conducted by GATE committee on behalf of MHRD. It takes place in eight zones .Candidates aspiring for higher studies in engineering and science has to get through GATE.A good score in the exam will land you up in good colleges and not only that students scoring high in the GATE exam will be awarded lucrative scholarships ranging from 5000 to 12000. The exam forms are available from the month of October and by the second week of November it has to be submitted. Date may vary so it is advisable to the student to check the web sites to confirm the dates. It is necessary for the students? preparing for GATE exam to get accustomed to the structure of the examination.
There ?are twenty one papers like Aerospace Engineering(AE), Agricultural Engineering(AG), Architecture and planning(AR), Biotechnology(BT) ,Civil Engineering (CE),Chemical Engineering(CH), Computer Science and Information Technology(CS),Chemistry(CY),Electronics and Communication Engineering(EC), Electrical Engineering(EE) , Geology and Geophysics(GG),Instrumentation Engineering(IN),Mathematics(MA),Mechanical Engineering(ME),Mining Engineering(ME),Metallurgical Engineering(MT) , Physics(PH) Production and Industrial Engineering(PI) ,Textile Engineering and Fiber science(TF),Engineering sciences(XE),Life science(XL).
Students are free to choose any one from the given option .It is advisable for them to choose subject on which they have specialized .There is no hard and fast rule regarding your choice. The Gate exam is comprised of a single paper. There are total 65 question and the full marks is 100.The questions are basically multiple choice questions and there are four options to each question .There is a negative marking. Students are advisable to answer those which they are aware of as there is no scope for guess work.
Students appearing in (XL) and (XE) will have to answer three sections apart from General Aptitude. Engineering mathematics is compulsory for (XE) and Chemistry is compulsory for (XL).Apart from these Gate courses there are portions from fluid science ,food technology, solid mechanics polymer science and engineering, thermodynamics, material sciences in Engineering sciences .In life sciences there are portions from micro biology, zoology ,botany,bio chemistry, food technology. Each GATE paper carries 15 marks for General Aptitude.
The examination paper with code(AE), (AR), (GG),(MN),(TF),are carried online and for the rest papers? students have to mark on optical response sheet. There are some numerical question s given in the exam which will have no negative marking.
