Wall Street falls as senator sees "fiscal cliff" fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks declined on Thursday after the leader of Senate Democrats warned the United States appeared headed over the "fiscal cliff" and data showed consumer confidence fell to a four-month low.

With only a few days left before devastating tax hikes and spending cuts go into effect, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said about the fiscal cliff, "It looks like where we're headed."

Reid criticized Republicans for refusing to go along with any tax increases as part of a compromise solution with Democrats to avoid the fiscal cliff, which economists warn will knock the economy into recession.

President Barack Obama was flying back to Washington from a Christmas holiday to push for more talks, while the top Republican in Congress planned to speak with House lawmakers to avoid the year-end deadline. Still, gaps remained between the two sides.

The benchmark S&P 500 index is on track for its fourth straight decline and is down 2 percent as negotiations over the budget crisis stalled. A four-day decline would mark the longest losing streak for the index in three months.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes in December fell to 65.1 as the budget crisis took the steam out of a growing sense of optimism about the economy. The gauge fell more than expected from a downwardly revised 71.5 in November.

Initial claims for unemployment benefits dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000 last week and the four-week moving average fell to the lowest since March 2008.

"Unfortunately, a term all of us are sick of hearing - the fiscal cliff - appears to be dominating all aspects of the financial market and consumer confidence," said Joe Heider, principal at Rehmann Financial in Cleveland Ohio.

"What has happened here is even though the consumer confidence number had a sharp decline, most people write it off as a result of what is happening in Washington rather than economic reality that is occurring in people's everyday lives."

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced the first of a series of measures that should push back the government's debt ceiling by around two months.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 77.41 points, or 0.59 percent, to 13,037.18. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 9.71 points, or 0.68 percent, to 1,410.12. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> fell 18.36 points, or 0.61 percent, to 2,971.80.

Marvell Technology Group fell 3.4 percent to $7.15 after it said it would seek to overturn a jury's finding of patent infringement. The stock had fallen more than 10 percent in the prior session after a federal jury found the company infringed two patents held by Carnegie Mellon University and ordered the chipmaker to pay $1.17 billion in damages.

The PHLX semiconductor index <.sox> lost 0.7 percent.

2012 review: The year in environment

Read more: "2013 Smart Guide: 10 ideas that will shape the year"

For anyone living on planet Earth, 2012 was a rough year. The US sweltered in a devastating drought, only to then bear the brunt of superstorm Sandy. Meanwhile Arctic sea ice shrank to its lowest extent on record, months after evidence emerged that it might have passed the point of no return.

Even as evidence for human-driven climate change continued to mount, the world did little about it. A major UN summit achieved little other than a vague promise to pay developing countries when they suffer harm from the changing climate. Developed countries continued their dash for gas, often using hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" to extract it, and greenhouse gas emissions kept rising. On a bright note, solar panels became the cheapest energy source in parts of the tropics.

Here is our pick of this year's environment stories.

Sandy aftermath: New York City is rotting at the coreMovie Camera
Beneath the destruction brought by superstorm Sandy lies a more insidious problem. Our reporter Lisa Grossman visited the city days after the storm struck and discovered that rising sea levels are corroding the very foundations of the Big Apple.

Arctic sea ice low heralds end of 3-million-year cover
It is smaller, patchier and thinner than ever ? the extent of the Arctic ice cap hit a record low in September. The loss of the Arctic sea ice is arguably the greatest environmental change in human history, and its consequences will extend far beyond the North Pole.

Fungus-powered superplants may beat the heat
2012 saw the US suffer the worst drought in over 50 years, and crops withered. Plants that have been genetically modified to need less water could have helped, but they are time-consuming and expensive to create. So researchers turned to symbiotic fungi that could help crops survive extreme conditions.

Geoengineering with iron might work after all
If you want to help stop climate change, try tipping some iron into the sea. For years, this idea has been considered a busted flush, but new results suggest it really can work ? although by itself it won't come close to offsetting our greenhouse gas emissions.

Seismologists found guilty of manslaughter
In a case that shocked the scientific world, six Italian seismologists, and a local civil protection official, were sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter. They were convicted of falsely reassuring the residents of the Italian town of L'Aquila that a major earthquake was not going to happen. The area was struck by a magnitude-6.3 earthquake in 2009, killing over 300.

Lonesome George dies but his subspecies' genes survive
The rarest animal in the world is no more. Lonesome George, the last of the Pinta Island tortoises, was found dead in June. But a small hope remains for his subspecies, as its genes have survived on one island in the Gal?pagos, and a careful breeding programme could bring the subspecies back to life.

Hidden green benefits of genetically modified crops
Fears about genetically modified crops returned after two studies claimed that they were bad both for our health and the environment. But the evidence was weak at best ? and a special investigation by New Scientist suggested that some GM crops may actually have green credentials.

Europe in 2050: A survivor's guide to climate change
Europe is now in a race against the climate. With little hope of a global deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions, big temperature rises are likely before 2100. That means countries have just decades to prepare. From reshaping cities to defending coastlines, we examine how countries need to change to survive.

Geoengineering would turn blue skies whiter
Blue skies would fade to hazy white if, in a bid to offset global warming, geoengineers inject light-scattering aerosols into the upper atmosphere. Critics had long warned that this might happen, and now the effect has been quantified.

Earth cracking up under Indian Ocean
You may not have felt it, but the whole world shuddered on 11 April as Earth's crust began the difficult process of breaking a tectonic plate. When two huge earthquakes ripped through the floor of the Indian Ocean, they triggered large aftershocks on faults the world over, and provided the best evidence yet that the vast Indo-Australian plate is being torn in two.

Michael Chang tips about surprising the opponents ? Tennis News ...

Michael Chang tips about surprising the opponents ? Tennis News

American professional, Michael Chang, rocked the world in 1989 by clinching a Roland Garros French Open title at the age of 17. He was the youngest male player ever to register such a majestic milestone in his teenage.

The media reporters of The Tennis Space visited the 40-year-old American earlier this month and asked him to give some tips about dismantling the concentration of the rival. During his conquest at Paris, he shocked the world by hitting an under-arm serve against Ivan Lendl in the fourth round. It is something that we don?t often see at the elite platforms.

Commenting about upsetting the opponent with guile, Chang stated to The Tennis Space, "You don?t want to be predictable. It was Andre Agassi who first showed me how effective an underarm serve could be, and how you could unsettle an opponent. He used to do that in junior matches in the 12-and-unders and the 14-and-unders."

Remembering the event when he used that technique in the fourth round of the French Open, Chang added, ?It was a spur of the moment decision, really, for me to hit an underarm serve during my fourth-round match against Ivan Lendl at the 1989 French Open. He was forced to come in and he didn?t like that. I think that underarm serve changed the whole mentality of the match. After that, he became more frustrated that the match wasn?t going his way.?

Chang was one of the most agile players of his era. He moved quickly on the court and played from the baseline. He was the founder of the jumping double-handed backhand as well. He reached the career-high ranking of world number two in his professional career and stayed amongst the Top-10 players for a long period of time during 1990?s.

Chang registered five consecutive years of success at the elite podium. He maintained a consistent record from 1992 to 1997; scoring 58, 62, 66, 65, 63 and 55 victories in each year respectively. He said goodbye to the world of tennis in 2003 at the age of 31. It was a pleasure to witness such a prolific 5?9 professional athlete of 90?s.

Sacks of potatoes stand in for humans in Boeing's in-air Wi-Fi tests

1 day

CHICAGO (AP) -?If the wireless Internet connection during your holiday flight seems more reliable than it used to, you could have the humble potato to thank.?

While major airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi on many flights, the signal strength can be spotty. Airlines and aircraft makers have been striving to improve this with the growing use of wireless devices and the number of people who don't want to be disconnected, even 35,000 feet up.?

"That's where potatoes come into the picture," Boeing spokesman Adam Tischler said.?Engineers at Chicago-based Boeing Co. used sacks of potatoes as stand-ins for passengers as they worked to eliminate weak spots in in-flight wireless signals. They needed full planes to get accurate results during signal testing, but they couldn't ask people to sit motionless for days while data was gathered.?

It turns out that potatoes ? because of their water content and chemistry ? absorb and reflect radio wave signals much the same way as the human body does, making them suitable substitutes for airline passengers.?

"It's a testament to the ingenuity of these engineers. They didn't go in with potatoes as the plan," Tischler said.?

Recapping the serendipitous path that led to better onboard wireless, Tischler said a member of the research team stumbled across an article in the Journal of Food Science describing research in which 15 vegetables and fruits were evaluated for their dielectric properties, or the way they transmit electric force without conduction.?

Its conclusions led the Boeing researchers to wonder if potatoes might serve just as well as humans during their own signal testing. Despite some skepticism, they ended up buying 20,000 pounds of them.?

Video and photos of the work, which started in 2006, show a decommissioned airplane loaded with row upon row of potato sacks that look like large, lumpy passengers. The sacks sit eerily still in the seats as the engineers collect data on the strength of wireless signals in various spots.?

The Boeing engineers added some complicated statistical analysis and the result was a proprietary system for fine tuning Internet signals so they would be strong and reliable wherever a laptop was used on a plane.?

Boeing says the system also ensures Wi-Fi signals won't interfere with the plane's sensitive navigation and communications equipment.?

"From a safety standpoint, you want to know what the peak signals are, what's the strongest signal one of our communications and navigation systems might see from a laptop or 150 laptops or 350 laptops," Boeing engineer Dennis Lewis explains in a video.?

In a nod to the humor in using a tuber to solve a high-tech problem, researchers dubbed the project Synthetic Personnel Using Dialectic Substitution, or SPUDS.?

The company says better Wi-Fi signals can be found already on three Boeing aircraft models flown by major airlines: 777, 747-8 and the 787 Dreamliner.

2 Ways To Be Proactive In Your Internet Business

If you?re on the brink of giving up in your internet business. I urge you to reconsider that thought, and consider trying something new if you want to stay in business for the long haul. You don?t have to say ?bye-bye? to your internet business? just change what you?re doing, and you will see that it?s easy to get sales online simply and easily.

You will also have to be proactive with your internet marketing routine. Don?t just sit there in despair waiting for a miracle. You can turn things around in your business yourself - all you need is a little motivation.

There are many ways to revive your internet business, and I want to show you some of the things that you could be doing also if you want turn your business around and start earning some real money. As always, these tips are purely simple and easy to do, and you should have no reason for not having success with them.

Here?s tip number 1:

1) Run more ads

If you?re currently running ads and it?s bringing you slow traffic, then consider running more ads. If you?re running ads and they aren?t bringing in ANY money, cut those advertising routes out, and switch to a different site to advertise on. Always make sure your advertising is accountable, and that it?s producing a good return on investment.

You could do pay per click ads (PPC). This is the fastest and most targeted form of advertising that you can invest in. The 2 biggest players in the PPC game are Google Adwords and Microsoft Adcenter. If you don?t want to use them, there are still other options too.

You can advertise on high traffic websites, advertise on blogs, do display/content advertising, or even start your own affiliate program. With an affiliate program, you can have hundreds or even thousands of people promoting your affiliate program, and making sales for you without breaking a sweat.

Here?s another way to revive your internet business:

2) Give away free stuff

This is a classical form of internet marketing that still works today. With this technique, you will need something called a ?squeeze page?. A squeeze page is simply a small web page where you entice your visitors to sign up to your email newsletter, and in return, you will get them a free gift (or gifts) for signing up.

Your free stuff should contain promotional material in it, all while making the information very good and worth reading. There?s a balance here. You don?t want to overdo the selling in your ebook? just sprinkle it lightly in your ebook, but make sure that the content is 100% good.

These 2 strategies should get you on the right path to earning more sales and profits in your internet business. Running more ads will give you immediate results, and giving away free stuff will help you to convert your prospects into customers via your email newsletter. I highly suggest you do both in your business today.
Good luck with marketing your business online successfully.

STEM graduates may not equal more jobs - Charlotte Observer

Science, technology, engineering and math ? the fields collectively known as STEM ? are all the rage these days. In an economy that is still struggling to regain its footing, boosting STEM is seen by many as a path to jobs.

Except ? what if it isn?t?

As STEM has become an education buzzword in recent years, a steady stream of research has emerged that challenges the notion of STEM as an economic elixir. In some STEM careers, the employment picture is downright lousy.

?Record unemployment among chemists in 2011,? screamed the March headline in Science magazine?s Careers Blog. A headline from June: ?What we need is more jobs for scientists.?

Unemployment in STEM fields is still well below the general population and slightly below college graduates in general. That ?record? unemployment for chemists, for example, was 4.6 percent, compared with overall U.S. unemployment at that time of 8.8 percent.

Nevertheless, the surplus of workers in some STEM areas (resulting in flat wages, and STEM grads forced to take jobs in non-STEM fields) directly contradicts the widely held view that the United States suffers from a critical shortage of qualified STEM graduates.

The truth, many experts say, is more complicated.

?In a general sense, science and innovation do create jobs and drive growth,? said Elizabeth Popp Berman, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Albany. Her book, ?Creating the Market University,? examines the history of university research and its economic impact. ?As a nation, having lots of scientists and people inventing stuff is good for us.?

But that doesn?t mean all STEM graduates have a guaranteed job, Berman stressed. The STEM employment picture, Berman said, is ?very mixed? and largely dependent upon a student?s particular major. Petroleum engineering majors are doing very well these days; biologists and chemists are not.

Some studies, meanwhile, have challenged the notion of a STEM worker shortage ? instead finding that the United States is producing vastly more STEM graduates than there are jobs awaiting them. As science organizations and corporations continue to sound the STEM shortage alarm, critics charge that these groups are motivated by self-interest. Tech companies, for example, have claimed a shortage of trained workers even as they laid off thousands of U.S. employees, and moved those jobs to low-wage developing countries.

?It?s a way for them to sort of excuse why they?re shifting so much work offshore,? said Rochester Institute of Technology professor Ron Hira, who has testified before Congress on the need to tighten the legal loopholes that allow such maneuvers.

In Florida, Gov. Rick Scott?s Blue Ribbon Task Force on State Higher Education Reform released a report recommending slightly discounted tuition for students pursuing certain majors ? primarily STEM. Though Scott has not yet formally embraced the proposal (his office says he?s reviewing it), the idea has sparked a backlash from humanities professors who feel their departments are being marginalized.

A group of frustrated University of Florida history professors recently launched a Change.org petition against the two-tiered pricing idea. The petition, which has gathered more than 1,800 signatures, predicts the state?s focus on steering students into ?strategic areas of emphasis? will wreak havoc on English, history and psychology departments, among others.

The new STEM tuition proposal, if implemented, would run counter to a national trend of universities charging more for STEM courses, not less. Because of lab facilities and small class sizes, STEM courses are among the most expensive for colleges to teach. As it stands now, STEM majors are already subsidized by students in other subjects.

Almost a year ago, the presidents of UF and Florida State University asked the state legislature for permission to raise prices for STEM majors, but that request was denied.

But if the STEM discount tuition went into effect, there?s a chance the sheer difficulty of STEM majors would limit its impact. Retention of STEM students has long been a national problem, as students sometimes grow frustrated with a particularly challenging course and switch majors. Math classes are a common stumbling block.

At Florida International University, where only about a third of students pass college algebra, Provost Douglas Wartzok said the school opened a math mastery lab this fall to boost student performance.

Though FIU has about 7,500 undergraduate students majoring in STEM fields, Wartzok said he is following a ?very balanced approach.? STEM degrees are encouraged, but so are other academic pursuits.

Wartzok had some reservations about making STEM degrees cheaper.

In an email, Wartzok wrote that a broad liberal arts education prepares students for a lifetime of occupations by developing ?critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and effective oral and written communication.?

?Most of the jobs our students are taking upon graduation didn?t exist when they started high school,? he wrote. ?Hence if we focus them on the career needs of today without giving them a strong liberal arts foundation, they will be trained for jobs that won?t exist when they graduate.?
