Here Are Your Questions About Franchising Mcdonalds : Business

You are here: Home / Business / Here Are Your Questions About Franchising Mcdonalds

Lisa asks?

How much is the franchising fee for McDonalds fast food for the Philippines setting?

Dan answers:

Last I heard, over 300,000 USD

Linda asks?

Subway or McDonalds which is a better franchising investment for Houston Texas?

I need to know if anyone has had experiene with either of these companies. I am interested in buying a established resturant or starting with a new building. Thank you so much

Dan answers:

I?d say McDonalds. Houston is a fast-paced city, I live in south Texas and people are always talking about how in Houston things are GO GO GO! And since it?s such a fast city McDonalds would fit right it! Subway is too slow.

Michael asks?

franchising like McDonalds?

Wow, I looked on their website for franchising opportunties and it really expensive. My question is how can I quickly gain atleast $1Million in the bank when I get grown? Im 16 right now?and what do you think I should major in college for this type of thing? What are the pros and cons in franchising in McDonalds?

Dan answers:

Hmm. Well, they have lists of the typical top 10 highest paying jobs in America, see if any of them interest you :]
Or you could just play the lottery everyday.

Jenny asks?

How much would it cost to open a Mcdonalds franchise?

How much would it cost to open a Mcdonalds franchise and how do I?

Dan answers:

About $300,000. But the kicker is that you need to be worth over a million.

James asks?

What are some benefits for investing in McDonalds Franchise, from an investor?s point of view?

I am thinking of buying a franchise, and researching McDonalds. Capital isn?t much of a problem, but what are the benefits of owning a McDonalds franchise? What is McDonald?s expansion selling strategy?

Dan answers:

McDonalds is an established business with a huge customer base. Basically as long as the place is clean and does everything all other McDonalds do, you are set and almost completely unlikely to lose money after the first year (almost everyone loses money the first year, but after that you should be set). The biggest problem is that you can?t always have the last decision in any decision making process, though of course it means you probably have to do less work as well.

Meet the new Republican front-runner: Newtman Caingrich (The Ticket)

Portrait of Newtman Caingrich via Ryan Lizza

He doesn't exist, but if he did, Newtman Caingrich would be the new front-runner to become the 2012 Republican presidential nominee.

Mr. Caingrich is a mythical cross between the Republican presidential candidates Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich, a creature birthed from the mind of Rick Perry at last week's presidential debate.

"I don't know how you would do this, but if you could take Herman Cain and mate him up with Newt Gingrich, I think you would have a couple of really interesting guys to work with," Perry said, responding to a question about who he would pick for a running mate, were he forced to choose from the candidates on stage.

Perry was on to something. According to a composite of three national polls conducted after the debate compiled by the New York Times analyst Nate Silver, Herman Cain has surged to third place in the field, with the support of 13 percent of Republican voters, while Newt Gingrich is in fourth place with 10 percent.

As a single creature, Newtman Caingrich would be a formidable candidate. Caingrich's 23.6 percent share puts him in first place, ahead of the putative front-runners Mitt Romney (22 percent) and Perry (21.7 percent).

Like a liger, Caingrich is bred for skills and magic, but in his case, the kind that win national elections.

Since the debate, Caingrich has inspired illustrations and has even been captured in a rare photograph. Mortals have made desperate attempts to define his mystery. Julie Weiner at Vanity Fair described Caingrich as a "chimera, as in the ancient Greek tradition, consisting of one part Newt Gingrich, one part Herman Cain, and one part Rick Perry's dreams."

Mr. Caingrich did not immediately respond to a request from The Ticket for comment because he's not real.

Auto Repair Ethics In Chagrin Falls ? Jimyz Automotive

Chagrin Falls Auto Repair Ethics We?re going to be talking about the ethics of automotive repair in Chagrin Falls. Unfortunately, every profession has some bad actors that hurt the reputation of everyone else. It?s no different in the Chagrin Falls area.

In the automotive world, Chagrin Falls industry associations and OH professional licensing organizations are very committed to high ethical standards.

Yet some people are still uncomfortable with automotive service and repair in Chagrin Falls.

If we understand what?s recommended and the benefits of taking care of the work ? and the pitfalls of putting it off ? we?ll have more trust in the recommendation. So communication is key. It?s like going to the doctor. If she?s using medical jargon and takes a lot of basic medical knowledge for granted, we have a hard time following her train of thought. We understand It can be like that with your service advisor at Jimyz Automotive, too. He?s so familiar with all things automotive, he may forget you don?t know a PCV from an EGT.

If you don?t understand what your doctor?s talking about: ask some questions. If you don?t understand what your Chagrin Falls automotive advisor at Jimyz Automotive is talking about: ask some questions.

Let?s go back to those ethical standards. When we hear a repair recommendation, we always ask ourselves, ?Is this really necessary?? Well, here?s the industry standard:

If a Chagrin Falls auto technician tells you that a repair or replacement is required, it must meet one of the following criteria:

1. The part no longer performs its intended purpose;
2. The part does not meet a design specification;
3. The part is missing.

For example, it you take your car in for a grinding noise when you step on the brakes, you may just think you need new brake pads. After the inspection, the technician says that you have a cracked rotor and need to replace it. If you tried to get him to just put new pads on, he would say that if you didn?t want to replace the rotor, he would ethically have to refuse the repair. To just put pads on a cracked rotor would have been very wrong. The brakes could?ve failed at anytime: they needed to be repaired ? not just have a band-aid slapped on them.

Now, looking at something not so serious, Jimyz Automotive may suggest repair or replacement if:

1. The part is close to the end of its useful life ? just above discard specifications or likely to fail soon;
2. To address a customer need or request ? like for better ride or increased performance;
3. To comply with maintenance recommended by the vehicle?s manufacturer;
4. Based on the technician?s informed experience.

Of course, Jimyz Automotive has the burden of making ethical recommendations and properly educating their customers. For the customer, if you are uncomfortable with a recommendation, ask some questions. More information is always a good thing.

LightSquared Announces Simple, Affordable Solution to GPS ...

Reston, VA, September 21, 2011, ? LightSquared?, a wholesale carrier building a nationwide wireless broadband network that will create consumer choice and industry innovation, has signed an agreement with Javad GNSS Inc. to develop a system that will eliminate related interference issues for high-precision GPS devices.

The Javad GNSS system can be adapted to work with high-precision GPS devices including those already in the agriculture, surveying, construction and defense industries.

Javad GNSS has completed the design, made prototypes and tested those prototypes. Preproduction units will be released for public tests in October, followed by mass production. High-precision receivers for positioning applications are expected to go to market by November 2011 and precision timing devices by March 2012.

?I have said from the beginning that this interference issue will be resolved as soon as smart engineers like Javad Ashjaee put their minds to it.?With this new system,?Mr. Ashjaee makes another mark for himself as a cutting edge pioneer in the precision GPS industry, a field he has helped shape for more than 30 years,? said Sanjiv Ahuja, chairman and chief executive officer of LightSquared.

?This breakthrough is a final step toward LightSquared?s goal of building a nationwide wireless network that will bring lower prices and better service to Americans from coast to coast.?

To develop the technology, Javad GNSS took the existing flagship receivers and reconfigured the filters and linear amplifiers to make them completely compatible with LightSquared?s bottom 10 MHz of spectrum. It was a very simple and inexpensive process and was developed in a matter of days. The additional cost for this technology is not expected to increase the selling price of the device to the customer.

?This interference problem is not a difficult one to solve, once you decide to solve it,?? said Javad GNSS founder Javad Ashjaee. ?We?ve begun manufacturing preproduction models and expect to have 25 available within two weeks ? we are not talking in hypotheticals here.?

?The truth is that high precision GPS users have a wide range of interference issues to contend with ? from congested frequencies to intentional jamming.? LightSquared made this problem much easier to solve by moving to spectrum farther away from the core GPS frequencies. As LightSquared?s spectrum neighbor, it?s our obligation to build a wall between our spectrum and LightSquared?s.? My filter accomplishes that goal,?? said Dr. Ashjaee.??Good fences make good neighbors.??

?The tests conducted so far by the GPS industry did not take into account the GPS modernization plan that is in place,? said Dr. Ashjaee. ?Since we have demonstrated that LightSquared can certainly coexist with the current GPS satellite signals, the coexistence will be even stronger when the new GPS satellites with modern L1C, L2C and L5 un-encrypted codes are launched.?

About LightSquared
LightSquared?s
mission is to revolutionize the U.S. wireless industry. With the creation of the first-ever, wholesale-only nationwide 4G-LTE network integrated with satellite coverage, LightSquared offers people the speed, value and reliability of universal connectivity, wherever they are in the United States. As a wholesale-only operator, LightSquared will deploy an open 4G wireless broadband network to be used by existing and new service providers to sell their own devices, applications and services ? at a competitive cost and without retail competition from LightSquared. The deployment and operation of LightSquared?s network represent more than $14 billion of private investment over the next eight years. FILE - In this July 1, 2011 file photo, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama gestures following an interview with The Associated Press outside his residence in the hill station town of Dharmsala, northern India. The Dalai Lama says if he is to be reincarnated he will leave written instructions about the process, but that the issue is unlikely to come up soon. The Tibetan spiritual leader said in a statement Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, that when he is about 90 he will consult Buddhist scholars to evaluate whether the institution of Dalai Lama should continue at all. He is 76. (AP Photo/Kevin Frayer, File)

(AP) ? South Africa officials may block the Dalai Lama from celebrating the 80th birthday of his friend and fellow Nobel Peace Laureate, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, amid fears that Chinese pressure is trumping the country's much-vaunted policies on freedom of speech and human rights.

South African newspapers are already drawing parallels between the situations of Tibetans under Chinese rule and black South Africans under the racist apartheid regime that ended in 1994. The tensions over the Dalai Lama's visa application also are a sign of how powerful China's influence has grown in Africa.

"Our leadership has a clear choice: to look deep into the African soul and emulate (Nelson) Mandela's actions by extending a hand of friendship, while at the same time understanding that it won't, in fact, have any real impact on our relations with China," said an editorial in the Daily Maverick.

"Or, once again to yield as the people who will submit to the will of another nation, to constrict our spirit and our standing as a moral society, and close our doors on a genuine man of peace and the justified hopes of his people."

The Dalai Lama is to deliver the inaugural Desmond Tutu International Peace lecture, titled "Peace and compassion as catalyst for change," as part of the Oct. 6-8 birthday celebrations for Tutu.

The center that invited the Dalai Lama says he first tried to apply for a visa in June but was told it was too far ahead of his trip. Later South African officials said they couldn't process the visa with a photocopied passport of the Buddhist icon and had to wait for him to submit his original document.

"We've sent letters, following up on a daily basis with phone calls and still are in a situation where there is no response and it's getting us much more anxious," said Nomfundo Wazala, CEO of the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre that has invited the Dalai Lama to South Africa. "We have been patient, but we really feel at this point in time we deserve an answer."

The Dalai Lama fled the Himalayan region in 1959 amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule and is reviled by Beijing as a separatist. China says Tibet has always been part of its territory, but many Tibetans say the region was virtually independent for centuries.

The 76-year-old leader insists he is only seeking increased autonomy for Tibet, not independence. He gave up his political role in the Tibetan exile movement in March, but he remains its spiritual head, beloved by Buddhists around the world.

The Dalai Lama was welcomed to South Africa on his first visit in 1996 and had a memorable visit with the country's first black and democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela.

But in 2009, the South African government outraged many by banning the Dalai Lama from attending a Nobel laureates' peace conference, saying it would detract attention from the 2010 soccer World Cup.

Tutu, revered for the part he played to end apartheid, called it "disgraceful" and accused the government of "shamelessly succumbing to Chinese pressure" ? a charge officials denied.

A spokesman for South Africa's foreign affairs department, Clayson Monyela, denied there was any pressure to block the Dalai Lama's visit this time around.

He said South African officials had only received a complete visa application on Sept. 20 and it was now being "subjected to the normal visa application processes." The South African High Commission in New Delhi, India, where the application was made, usually issues tourist visas within seven days.

Sonam Tenzing, the Dalai Lama's representative for Africa, disputed the government's account as "totally incorrect." He said the visa application was made on Aug. 29 including a photocopy of the Dalai Lama's passport since he was traveling to Latin America.

Monyela said the application was incomplete until they received the passport itself.

Late Monday, frustrated officials released three letters written by the Desmond Tutu Peace Trust chairman, Dumisa Ntsebeza, to the deputy minister of international relations, Ebrahim I. Ebrahim ? all of which they said have gone unanswered.

One dated Sept. 7 says the Dalai Lama first tried to apply for a visa in June, when he was told he should reapply nearer the time. When an attempt was made in July, it said the South African High Commission refused to accept the application, saying it needed "clearance from (officials in) Pretoria."

It said Tutu and his representatives have approached a number of senior government members "but nobody seemed willing to engage the matter" even after Ntsebeza discussed it with President Jacob Zuma.

"Neither Archbishop Tutu nor the Peace Centre is insensitive to the challenges government may face from China ..." the letter says.

South African officials may be especially squeamish following Beijing's furious response to Mexico's President Felipe Calderon meeting the Dalai Lama earlier this month.

The meeting "grossly interfered with China's internal affairs, hurt the feelings of the Chinese people and harmed Chinese-Mexican relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said.

China was equally strident when U.S. President Barack Obama received the Dalai Lama at the White House in July, ignoring Chinese warnings.

"We demand the U.S. side seriously consider China's stance, immediately adopt measures to wipe out the baneful impact, stop interfering in China's internal affairs and cease to connive and support anti-China separatist forces that seek 'Tibetan independence,'" Ma said at the time.

In March 2009, Zuma said the real problem was the timing of the Dalai Lama's visit ? the 50th anniversary of the Buddhist leader's flight into exile. Zuma became president of South Africa soon after.

"Well, Zuma is now in charge of the government, the Dalai Lama has been invited again, and this time the invitation is not for March but for October. So what about it, Mr. President?" the Daily News asked.

You don?t need a lot of fancy first aid stuff for anything that?s less than about a quarter inch deep and not a gusher, says Marie Savard, M.D., women?s health expert and author of How to Save Your Own Life. First, apply pressure until the bleeding stops, then rinse the cut with plain warm water to flush it out. (Soap can irritate, but if the wound is really dirty, it?s OK to use a gentle antibacterial soap.) Dab dry, and cover the cut with a Band-Aid. That?s it. ?I hate antibiotic ointments like Neosporin,? says Dr. Savard. ?They may actually delay healing.? Still not sure? ?Don?t put anything on a cut that you wouldn?t put in your eye,? Dr. Roizen says. Uncover the wound after 24 to 48 hours, says Dr. Savard. ?The more air it gets, the faster it will heal.? All this said, any cut (or very shallow puncture) that isn?t truly on the mend after a week warrants attention from a pro.

Removal of fibroids that distort the womb cavity may prevent recurrent miscarriages, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2011) ? Researchers have found the first, firm evidence that fibroids are associated with recurrent miscarriages. They have also discovered that if they removed the fibroids that distorted the inside of the womb, the risk of miscarriage in the second trimester of pregnancy was reduced dramatically -- to zero.

The study, which is published online in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction, is the culmination of 20 years of investigation into recurrent miscarriage by Professor Tin-Chiu Li and his team at the recurrent miscarriage clinic at the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (Sheffield, UK). In addition, for the first time it has given a reliable estimate of the prevalence of fibroids in women who have recurrent miscarriages.

Fibroids in or around the womb (uterus) are benign tumours composed of muscle and fibrous tissue. Although they have been associated with spontaneous miscarriage, until now there has been no evidence of their role in recurrent miscarriages (RM). The prevalence of fibroids has been estimated to be between 3-10% in women of reproductive age, but the prevalence is unknown in women who experience RM, which is defined as three or more consecutive miscarriages.

The researchers analysed data from 966 women who attended the Sheffield RM clinic. The women were scanned for uterine anomalies, including fibroids, via transvaginal ultrasound and radiology, and 79 were found to have fibroids. "This enabled us to calculate that the prevalence of fibroids was 8.2% among women with recurrent miscarriages; this has never been accurately reported before," said one of the researchers, Dr Sotirios Saravelos, who is a clinical research Fellow at the University of Sheffield.

Fibroids were diagnosed and grouped into three classifications:

  • Submucosal -- these grow in the muscle beneath the inner lining of the womb wall and grow into the middle of the womb, distorting the cavity
  • Intramural -- these develop in the muscle wall of the womb and are the most common type of fibroid. They do not distort the cavity and have less than 50% protrusion into the serosal surface -- the outer membrane lining the womb
  • Subserosal -- these grow outside the wall of the womb into the pelvis, do not distort the womb cavity, and have a greater than 50% protrusion out of the serosal surface.

Prof Li used minimally invasive surgery (hysteroscopy) to remove cavity-distorting (submucosal) fibroids from 25 women; 54 women with fibroids that did not distort the cavity had no surgery and they were matched with a control group of 285 women whose recurrent miscarriages were still unexplained after all investigations found nothing abnormal; these women also had no intervention.

In the 25 women who had undergone surgery, miscarriage rates in subsequent pregnancies during the second trimester fell from 21.7% to 0%. This translated to an increase in the live birth rate from 23.3% to 52%.

Dr Saravelos said: "This is the first time that it has been shown that removing fibroids that distort the uterine cavity may increase the chances of a subsequent live birth in women with recurrent miscarriages."

The 54 women with fibroids not distorting the uterine cavity and who had had no surgery also did better after referral to the RM clinic. Pre-referral, the miscarriage rate during the second trimester was 17.6% and this fell to 0% after referral. Live birth rates went up from 20.6% to 70.4% in subsequent pregnancies. This was similar to results from the 285 women with unexplained RM; the second trimester miscarriage rate was 8% pre-referral to the clinic, falling to 1.8% post-referral, while live birth rates increased from 20.6% to 71.9% after referral.

Dr Saravelos said: "These results are interesting because they suggest that the finding of fibroids in women with recurrent miscarriage does not necessarily imply that the fibroids are the only cause of the miscarriage. In addition, they suggest that surgical intervention is not the only means whereby patients with recurrent miscarriage benefit from attending a specialised, dedicated clinic. However, for women with fibroids that distort the uterine cavity, our work shows that removing the fibroids can eliminate miscarriage during the second trimester and double the live birth rate in subsequent pregnancies.

"It has been recognised since the 1980s that women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage have very good pregnancy outcomes following referral to a dedicated clinic without the need for any intervention, and with psychological supportive care, i.e. tender loving care, alone. This usually takes the form of regular visits to a dedicated recurrent miscarriage clinic, regular antenatal scans to check the condition of the baby, reassurance to the mother from the specialist that everything is progressing well and specialist antenatal counselling throughout the pregnancy.

"Interestingly, although women may increase their live birth rate by up to 50% after psychological supportive care, the exact underlying mechanisms involved in this process are not entirely understood. In the present study, the fact that women with fibroids not distorting the uterine cavity do so well, suggests that they also do not have an underlying cause for recurrent miscarriage. As a result, they can also be considered as having 'unexplained recurrent miscarriage', and should be counselled that they have very good chances of a successful pregnancy without the need for any intervention or surgery and with the psychological supportive care offered by a dedicated recurrent miscarriage clinic."

The main limitation of the study is that there was no control group for the women who had their fibroids removed and so it is not possible to tell whether they would have done better without surgery, after referral to the RM clinic. The researchers say that their work highlights the need to perform a randomised controlled trial to investigate this.

"The definitive study requires the recruitment of a rather large number of patients to be randomised between intervention and no intervention. This would require the input of several clinics in a multi-centre randomised controlled trial and its success would depend on the support of all clinics along with that of Sheffield," said Dr Saravelos.

Are You Engaging the Creativity of Your People?

Last week we discussed ways in which your organization could tap into its creative resources. I mentioned a few resources and strategic plans that could be put into action to achieve the creative results that any Fortune 500 company would be proud to obtain. Today, we?re going to talk a little more about getting creativity from your company and how to put that creativity to work for you.

Identify Your Company?s Top Resources and Put Them To Work

I?ve said it time and time again ? a company will not thrive unless it is able to recognize what its most valuable assets truly are. Your company?s assets aren?t limited to your available cash flow, your buildings, your equipment or any other tangible item. Your company?s greatest assets are its employees.

As we discussed before, when it comes to getting creativity from your organization your employees are the go-to solution. In fact, you should be using your employees to conduct a SWOT analysis prior to engaging your organization in any project whatsoever, or even to get a handle on the overall functioning of your business in its present state.

What Is a SWOT Analysis?

If you?ve never heard the term SWOT analysis, you aren?t utilizing one of the best tools available to your company. SWOT is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. It is a powerful tool that can be used frequently to take the pulse on what to change and what not to change. While there are more sophisticated ways to gather information, such as surveys and employee interviews, those are best done by an external consultant. The SWOT is often a DIY (Do It Yourself) methodology and can help your management team identify the favorable and unfavorable factors that could influence your strategic plans and objectives.

So who should perform this SWOT analysis? The people who know your company best and who can provide you with the greatest creative input ? your own employees. However, it?s also important to remember that a SWOT analysis doesn?t have to be restricted for use on projects or undertakings. You can put together a team to get a SWOT analysis of your company as a whole.

If you want your employees? insight and creativity to truly be put to work, build a SWOT team and have a SWOT analysis performed for various departments within your organization and for your organization in its entirety. You may be surprised at the information you discover through this creative brainstorming process.

Just remember, if you are going to ask for information from your employees, you must be willing to share the results and to act upon them.

If you want more information on SWOT analysis and unleashing your employees creativity, email Tom Walsh, PhD at tcwalshphd@grenell.com

Movie Review: The Social Network Writer Aaron Sorkin Scores ...

Moneyball is not a movie about baseball, just as The Social Network, the last film by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (A Few Good Men, The West Wing) was not a movie about creating an internet site. The secret to Sorkin?s success, rather, lies in his ability to take heady, potentially obtuse subjects and chisel out the essential drama. Both films are ultimately about brainy, gutsy characters who go all-in against all odds on an idea they believe in. In that sense, they could both be considered almost religious films, dressed in the trappings of our two great American loves ? business and sports.

Moneyball and The Social Network share many traits. Both movies are smartly-scripted, at times funny, engaging, entertaining, and ultimately easy to swallow. They toss around facts and lingo in a way that feels in sync with the way we now use information to amuse ourselves. They cater to our undying loyalty to the underdog. They employ characters with just the right dash of personal ambiguity to make them undeniably likable in their measured un-likability. And by resolving both movies on a note one half-step below Hollywood happy and with an open-ended sense of characterization, Sorkin shows just the right amount of dramatic moderation to make audiences think his movies are better than they actually are.

Much has already been made of Sorkin?s feat in turning Michael Lewis? book, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, into a feature film, but that really isn?t what Sorkin has done here. Lewis? book is a heady analytic examination of sabermetrics, a revolutionary statistical approach to evaluating baseball players. Along with director Bennett Miller (Capote), the writer has instead written a more conventional style of sports movie, told not from the perspective of the players, but of the general manager, the man in charge buying, selling, and trading the team?s players. The Oakland A?s GM is Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), who was once a touted prospect in his own right before his career flared out and he moved to the A?s front office. The challenge Beane faces as the A?s GM is that he is running a team with a budget that is roughly less than a third of what large franchises, like the New York Yankees, have to spend on their players. As Moneyball opens, the A?s successful 2001 season ends with a loss in the divisional playoffs. Weeks after, the team?s three stars, developed within the A?s organization, are bought by the big dog teams in free agency.

The movie then follows Beane?s struggle to create a winning ballclub on pennies, and the solution comes in an epiphany provided by the nerdy young Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), whom Beane meets during an unsuccessful trade negotiation with the Cleveland Indians. Brand tells Beane about sabermetrics, a way of looking at baseball not in terms of star athletes, but rather in the nut-and-bolts results needed to win games, such as getting runners on base and scoring runs. As a result, Beane signs a roster of seeming scrubs who excel at unsexy talents like drawing walks and sacrifice flies. It?s a baseball basics approach to the game that will be familiar to Texas Rangers fans; current Rangers? manager Ron Washington was an assistant coach on Beane?s 2002 A?s squad.

Of course Beane?s adoption of sabermetrics didn?t happen as dramatically in real life as it is depicted in Moneyball. Even before 2002 the GM was developing players using some of the ideas. And Hill?s character, Peter Brand, is actually a hybrid of a number of influential personalities who helped shaped the A?s surprisingly successful 2002 roster. But those factual details show us how Sorkin goes about crafting his dramas. He is a clean writer, and he sets his characters in motion with a formal, almost classical touch. Beane propels the plot?s motion forward, and tension is created both by situation and the grumpy manager Art Howe, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in a less than dynamic, though dramatically efficacious role. The struggle, powered by Pitt?s superstar likability and Sorkin?s razor sharp dialogue, can?t help but entangle the audience in this simple story. Even if you know everything the A?s achieved and didn?t achieve in 2002, you can?t wait to see it unfold in the larger than life.

Sorkin is really a good screenwriter, and yet what lingers with me after seeing his movies is a sad sense that good screenwriters are all the more rare these days ? or at least it is rare that good screenwriters? works get made. Moneyball should not be the cinematic event it is being made out to be. There should be a dozen movies every year that are as good as Moneyball. That said, I?ll take as many movies Sorkin can churn out ? they are enjoyable, enthralling, and transporting. But they also fall short of the kind of ambition our uneasy times seem to currently demand.

Moneyball, like The Social Network, is at its heart an affirmation of the human spirit and of that American everyman capacity for courage and the extraordinary. As a film, Moneyball most resembles the work of someone like Frank Capra, who produced some of the most beloved American films and yet whose work always seems crimped by the sentimentality of American?s vision of itself in the 1950s. You can see a similar nostalgia in Moneyball. For example, there is not a single mention of steroids in the film, despite the fact that the film is set during the doldrums of that shameful sporting era and that one of the A?s players, Jason Giambi, is steroid poster boy. That omission speaks to the kind Norman Rockwell vision that characterized Capra?s films and which sneaks into both Moneyball and The Social Network. The line, ?It is hard not to be romantic about baseball,? repeats throughout the movie. And we movie lovers love romance.
