Va Home Loans | Houses for Rent for Lease

An individual of the approaches you can steer clear of foreclosure is by filing a partial claim on VA/FHA Financial loans. If your mortgage is a VA or FHA insured mortgage loan, your loan provider may possibly be capable to provide a 1-time payment to bring your mortgage back to existing status.

Even so, there are a range of qualifications you will have to meet.

The VA or FHA associations will inform you if you qualify and support supply assistance with your existing scenario. Refinance your home loan ? only people with fantastic credit score will need apply

There are some things to assume about having said that. To steer clear of foreclosure, genuine loan companies are a lot much more very likely to re-finance a home loan to help a borrower who has undergone a short-term setback, but has in any other case a good credit rating historical past, and as a result most likely to pay the refinanced house loan. Even so, most loan companies will not re-finance if the personal loan is much more than 60 days late.

Refinance your mortgage mortgage ? stay absent from the scams

I personally spoke with a loan provider who bragged about how he can get property proprietors to signal-around the deeds to their households to him for back-payments only, and then lease the properties again to them, resulting in a total reduction of their equity. (By the way, this is illegal in California, but it happens fairly often.)

Refinance your house loan ? only men and women with equity will qualify

Make sure you observe, refinancing your mortgage mortgage will only consider area if there is sizeable equity in the home as the residence is applied for collateral on the mortgage. If you owe additional than your residence is truly worth, the biggest alternate would be to obtain a quick sale relatively than consider to attain a residence mortgage re-finance to avert foreclosure.

The army is additional like a beginning. Have you at any time thought of the further life rewards are out there as a member of the military? I did not assume so. Let me make clear to you the a lot of army positive aspects so you can have an understanding of a very little improved. Besides free of charge overall health, absolutely free on base place and board, food and no cost transportation rewards presented to you during your support in the army, one of the most useful rewards is the option to use the army VA property loans system.

It does not get very much far better than this.

If you are a service individual, possibly active duty or retired, it would advantage you tremendously to take into account acquiring a home applying a VA dwelling mortgage. With interest charges the lowest they have been in a long time and quite a few various payment selections offered, suitable now is the time to stop by a VA dwelling mortgage specialist and discover the lowest charges accessible.

When economic times are tricky and individuals, even those with a university degree or other superior education, are pounding the streets shopping for get the job done with unsuccessful final results, confusion reigns. What to do? Well, some give up and return residence to their mom and dad where by mother and dad deliver a roof around their heads.

All Critics (74) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (66) | Rotten (8)

Morris's subject is sexual fantasy and a particular kind of American stupidity-the ability to substitute self-justification for self-knowledge. His tone is merry.

It is quite simply one of the craziest stories ever told, made all the crazier by the fact that it's true. Or at least some version of it is true.

Tabloid, Errol Morris' latest wild and woolly portrait of human self-delusion, is a scandal-sheet dream come to life.

A tale of obsession and abduction, self-delusion and sexual confusion, Errol Morris' Tabloid stands as an almost giddy affirmation of the old cliche: Truth is stranger than fiction.

The viewer is left with no clear indication of what really happened, but with a vibrant portrait of a compelling character. That's what Morris is after.

Morris adds to the hilarity with his signature device of superimposing key words onscreen in giant type; the movie is a welcome reminder that he got his start immortalizing American oddballs.

a magnificently unsettling and funny-sad portrait of the arguably sick relationships that are forged between celebrities, the media, and their audiences

The film around [Joyce] McKinney isn't quite sure of what it's about, at times... but McKinney herself is the sort of arresting figure that you don't shake easily.

Errol Morris succeeds against all odds in besting his previous Olympians of quirkiness.

William Carlos Williams wrote "The pure products of America/ Go crazy," and the funny, freaky Tabloid captures that contrast, that promise, that curse.

The movie is guilty of condescending toward its subjects, though most of them appear to be having a fabulous time telling tales.

Doesn't tell us anything about sleazy journalism or the insatiable thirst for gossip that we didn't already know. Far-fetched and overblown just about sums it up.

"Tabloid" is the hilariously strange-but-true documentary of Joyce McKinney, a media-savvy nutcase decades ahead of her time, thank the Lord.

A wonderfully crafted and incredibly entertaining nonfiction film with all the wily narrative surprise of a tawdry B-movie run amok.

A thought-provoking picture raising the question: Can a woman rape a man, or is it merely assault with intent to please? You be the judge.

Morris is clearly fascinated by her mega eccentricities and lets her go on at great length telling her side of the story.

First-tier documentarian Errol Morris finds himself slumming a bit with Tabloid.

Although he has tackled many serious subjects (and finally won an Oscar for The Fog of War, his gut-wrenching portrait of former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara), filmmaker Errol Morris has always had a fondness for life's oddballs...

A Few Weeks With HP ProBook 4430s ? Sold, Big Screen, Big Sound ...

About Ramon Ray

Ramon Ray, Editor & Technology Evangelist, Smallbiztechnology.com - see his full bio at http://www.ramonray.com More...

I?ve spent the last few weeks trying out HP?s ProBook 4430s. While there is a lot of attention on tablets, apps and social media, the boring, plain, simple notebook computer is still reigning with many business professionals.

The ProBook has a large 14? screen, built in optical drive and a finger print reader for extra security. I?m not a sound nut, but I know when your having down time and listening to music it?s nice to have some nice sound. The ProBook has?SRS Premium Sound, which in simple terms means it will sound better than your average notebook computer speakers.

There?s also an ?instant? on feature wherein the notebook boots up to a web browser so you have fast access to the Internet. For those of you who are only in the cloud, as I increasingly am ? you might use this feature more than you think.

The ProBook is not a super light notebook, but then again with special features, 14? screen, built in optical drive and an option 9 or 6 cell battery ? it?s not designed to be the lightest notebook in the world.

The brushed metal screams of durability and looks solid and professional.

At around $600 HP?s ProBook is a solid mobile work horse and competitively priced.

Shopping for a notebook computer can be like shopping for women?s shoes ? if you?re a man. There are so many choices, many are similar, so many different prices ranges. Although looking for one can be a challenge, it?s great to have so many choices for mobile computing options ? various models and a variety of vendors to choose from.

DAKAR, Senegal ? Police have detained a member of a rap group which has been a leading force behind mass protests calling for the resignation of Senegal's aging president.

Drug prices to plummet in wave of expiring patents (AP)

The cost of prescription medicines used by millions of people every day is about to plummet.

The next 14 months will bring generic versions of seven of the world's 20 best-selling drugs, including the top two: cholesterol fighter Lipitor and blood thinner Plavix.

The magnitude of this wave of expiring drugs patents is unprecedented. Between now and 2016, blockbusters with about $255 billion in global annual sales are set to go off patent, notes EvaluatePharma Ltd., a London research firm. Generic competition will decimate sales of the brand-name drugs and slash the cost to patients and companies that provide health benefits.

Top drugs getting generic competition by September 2012 are taken by millions every day: Lipitor alone is taken by about 4.3 million Americans and Plavix by 1.4 million. Generic versions of big-selling drugs for blood pressure, asthma, diabetes, depression, high triglycerides, HIV and bipolar disorder also are coming by then.

The flood of generics will continue for the next decade or so, as about 120 brand-name prescription drugs lose market exclusivity, according to prescription benefit manager Medco Health Solutions Inc.

"My estimation is at least 15 percent of the population is currently using one of the drugs whose patents will expire in 2011 or 2012," says Joel Owerbach, chief pharmacy officer for Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, which serves most of upstate New York.

Those patients, along with businesses and taxpayers who help pay for prescription drugs through corporate and government prescription plans, collectively will save a small fortune. That's because generic drugs typically cost 20 percent to 80 percent less than the brand names.

Doctors hope the lower prices will significantly reduce the number of people jeopardizing their health because they can't afford medicines they need.

Dr. Nieca Goldberg, director of The Women's Heart Program at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan, worries about patients who are skipping checkups and halving pills to pare costs.

"You can pretty much tell by the numbers when I check the patient's blood pressure or cholesterol levels," that they've not taken their medications as often as prescribed, she says.

Even people with private insurance or Medicare aren't filling all their prescriptions, studies show, particularly for cancer drugs with copays of hundreds of dollars or more.

The new generics will slice copayments of those with insurance. For the uninsured, who have been paying full price, the savings will be much bigger.

Daly Powers, 25, an uninsured student who works two part-time jobs at low wages, says he often can't afford the $220 a month for his depression and attention deficit disorder pills. He couldn't buy either drug in June and says he's struggling with his Spanish class and his emotions. He looks forward to his antidepressant, Lexapro, going generic early next year.

"It'd make all the difference in the world," says Powers, of Bryan, Texas.

Generic medicines are chemically equivalent to the original brand-name drugs and work just as well for nearly all patients.

When a drug loses patent protection, often only one generic version is on sale for the first six months, so the price falls a little bit initially. Then, several other generic makers typically jump in, driving prices down dramatically.

Last year, the average generic prescription cost $72, versus $198 for the average brand-name drug, according to consulting firm Wolters Kluwer Pharma Solutions. Those figures average all prescriptions, from short-term to 90-day ones.

Average copayments last year were $6 for generics, compared with $24 for brand-name drugs given preferred status by an insurer and $35 for nonpreferred brands, according to IMS Health.

Among the drugs that recently went off patent, Protonix, for severe heartburn, now costs just $16 a month for the generic, versus about $170 for the brand name. And of the top sellers that soon will have competition, Lipitor retails for about $150 a month, Plavix costs almost $200 a month and blood pressure drug Diovan costs about $125 a month. For those with drug coverage, their out-of-pocket costs for each of those drugs could drop below $10 a month.

Jo Kelly, a retired social worker in Conklin, Mich., and her husband Ray, a retired railroad mechanic, each take Lipitor and two other brand-name medicines, plus some generic drugs. Both are 67, and they land in the Medicare prescription "doughnut hole," which means they must pay their drugs' full cost, by late summer or early fall each year. That pushes their monthly cost for Lipitor to about $95 each, and their combined monthly prescription cost to nearly $1,100.

Generic Lipitor should hit pharmacies Nov. 30 and cost them around $10 each a month.

"It would be a tremendous help for us financially," she says. "It would allow us to start going out to eat again."

For people with no prescription coverage, the coming savings on some drugs could be much bigger. Many discount retailers and grocery chains sell the most popular generics for $5 a month or less to draw in shoppers.

The impact of the coming wave of generics will be widespread ? and swift.

Insurers use systems that make sure patients are switched to a generic the first day it's available. Many health plans require newly diagnosed patients to start out on generic medicines. And unless the doctor writes "brand only" on a prescription, if there's a generic available, that's almost always what the pharmacist dispenses.

"A blockbuster drug that goes off patent will lose 90 percent of its revenue within 24 months. I've seen it happen in 12 months," says Ben Weintraub, a research director at Wolters Kluwer Pharma Solutions.

The looming revenue drop is changing the economics of the industry.

In the 1990s, big pharmaceutical companies were wildly successful at creating pills that millions of people take every day for common conditions, from heart disease and diabetes to osteoporosis and chronic pain. Double-digit quarterly profit increases became the norm.

But the patents on those blockbusters, which were filed years before the drugs went on sale, last for 20 years at most, and many expire soon.

In recent years, many drug companies have struggled to develop new blockbuster drugs, despite multibillion-dollar research budgets and more partnerships with scientists at universities and biotech companies. The dearth of successes, partly because the "easy" treatments have already been found, has turned the short-term prognosis for "big pharma" anemic.

"The profit dollars that companies used to reinvest in innovation are no longer going to be coming," warns Terry Hisey, life sciences leader at consultant Deloitte LLP's pharmaceutical consulting business. He says that raises "long-term concerns about the industry's ability to bring new medicines to market."

But pharmaceutical companies can save billions when they stop promoting drugs that have new generic rivals, and U.S. drug and biotech companies are still spending more than $65 billion a year on R&D.

The 20 new drug approvals in the U.S. this year, and other important ones expected in the next few years, eventually will help fill the revenue hole.

For now, brand-name drugmakers are scrambling to adjust for the billions in revenue that will soon be lost. Many raise prices 20 percent or more over the last couple years before generics hit to maximize revenue. Some contract with generic drugmakers for "authorized generics," which give the brand-name company a portion of the generic sales.

Brand-name companies also are trimming research budgets, partnering with other companies to share drug development costs and shifting more manufacturing and patient testing to low-cost countries.

Pharmaceutical companies have cut about 10 percent of U.S. jobs in four years, from a peak of about 297,000 to about 268,000, according to Labor Department data. Nearly two-thirds of the cuts came in the last 1 1/2 years, partly because of big mergers that were driven by the need to shore up pipelines and boost profit in the short term by slashing overlap.

Drug companies also are trying to stabilize future sales by putting more sales reps in emerging markets such as China and India, and diversifying into businesses that get little or no generic competition. Those include vaccines, diagnostic tests, veterinary medicines and consumer health products.

As the proportion of prescriptions filled with generic drugs jumped to 78 percent in 2010, from 57 percent in 2004, annual increases in prescription drug spending slowed, to just 4 percent in 2010. According to the Generic Pharmaceutical Association, generics saved the U.S. health care system more than $824 billion from 2000 through 2009, and now save about $1 billion every three days.

The savings are only going to get greater as our overweight population ages. People who take their medicines regularly often avoid costly complications and hospitalizations, says AARP's policy chief, John Rother, bringing the system even bigger savings than the cheaper drugs.

In addition, many patients taking a particular brand-name drug will defect when a slightly older rival in the same class goes generic.

Global sales of Lipitor peaked at $12.9 billion in 2006, the year Zocor, an older drug in the statin class that reduces bad cholesterol, went generic. Lipitor sales then declined slowly but steadily to about $10.7 billion last year. That still makes Lipitor the biggest drug to go generic.

For patients, it's a godsend.

Douglas Torok, 59, of Erie, Pa., now spends nearly $290 every three months for insulin for his Type 2 diabetes, plus four daily pills, including Lipitor, Plavix and two generics, for his blood pressure and cholesterol problems. The $40,000-a-year foundry supervisor fears not being able to cover the out-of-pocket costs when he retires and doesn't have a generous prescription plan.

In the meantime, once Lipitor and Plavix get generic competition his copayment will plunge from the current $1 per day for each.

"I will pay $16 for 90 days" for both, says Torok, who hopes to travel more. "It's a big deal for me on my income."

Family of late singer Amy Winehouse visits her home to greet ...

LONDON (AP) ? Amy Winehouse?s father thanked mourners outside her north London home for their support on Monday, and police said a post mortem examination would be held later in the day to determine the cause of the singer?s death.

Mitch Winehouse thanked people for coming to lay bouquets, candles and handwritten notes, which lay in growing mounds across the road from the Victorian house where the soul diva died.

?I can?t tell you what this means to us ? it really is making this a lot easier for us,? he said.

?We?re devastated and I?m speechless but thanks for coming.?

The singer?s mother, Janis, was in tears as she examined the flowers, candles, vodka bottles, flags, drawings and handwritten cards left by neighbors, fans and well-wishers. Many of the offerings expressed the same sentiment: ?What a waste.?

?I?ll remember her as a troubled soul,? said fan Ethna Rouse, who brought her 4-year-old son to leave a bouquet. ?Like many artists in the world ? they are tortured souls, and that?s where the talent comes from.?

The 27-year-old singer died Saturday after publicly struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for years. Her body was discovered at home by a member of her security team, who called an ambulance. It arrived too late to save her.

Police have said the cause of her death is being treated as ?unexplained,? and have said speculation that she might have suffered an overdose was inappropriate.

Police said a post-mortem would be conducted Monday afternoon, when an inquest into the death will be opened and adjourned. Results will likely be announced Tuesday.

Your 'Antiques Roadshow' Fantasy, Those Old ... - Morrison World News

On Sunday, appraisers from the PBS hit show ?Antiques Roadshow? recorded the highest-value collection ever appraised in the show?s?15-year history.

The big ticket item: five Chinese carved rhinoceros-horn cups dating to the late 17th or early 18th century,?which are worth between $1 and $1.5 million. An Oklahoma resident bought the cups inexpensively in the 1970s, according to a press release from the show?s producers. The reason the value of the cups is so high is due to China?s growing demand for Chinese antiquities.

The episode will air as part of ?Antiques Roadshow?s? 16th season in 2012. The name of the lucky owner of the cups was not released.

Parents' stress tied to pollution's effect on kids (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Children living in high-stress households are more vulnerable to lung damage from traffic pollution than children whose parents are less stressed out, according to the results of a new study.

"It makes sense," said Dr. Jane Clougherty from the University of Pittsburgh, who was not involved in this study. "The bodily wear and tear induced by...stress could make the individual more susceptible to the effects of traffic-related air pollution."

The researchers took measurements of several indicators of lung function in nearly 1,400 children living in southern California.

They also predicted the amount of traffic pollutants the children were exposed to by sampling almost 1,000 different sites around the area. In particular the researchers were looking for nitrogen oxides, which are formed when fuel is burned. Nitrogen oxides can damage lung tissue and make asthma worse, they explain in an article in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Six years earlier, the children's parents had filled out a questionnaire about their level of stress. The questions asked how often they felt able to handle personal problems or felt in control, for instance.

Air pollution levels varied widely depending on where the children lived, from six parts per billion of nitrogen oxides to 101 parts per billion.

For kids from high-stress homes, when the average amount of nitrogen oxides in the air went up by 22 parts per billion, their lung function got roughly five percent worse.

That same increase in pollutants around a child whose parents had a low level of stress made no difference to their lung function, however.

Dr. Talat Islam from the University of Southern California, the lead author of the study, said he expected that stress would lead to a bigger effect of pollution on kids, but he was surprised that increased air pollution had no effect on the kids from low-stress homes.

"We see the whole effect of traffic-related air pollution in those children who were exposed to higher stress," Islam told Reuters Health.

Islam's group did not test whether that decrease in lung function among these children had any effect on their health or comfort.

An earlier study by some of the same researchers found that children exposed to traffic-related air pollution and a high-stress home were 51 percent more likely to develop asthma than children exposed to the same pollutants, but in a low-stress environment (see Reuters Health report, July 21, 2009).

It's not clear what might underlie the links between pollution, a stressful household, and lung function, but Islam said that stress and pollutants are both tied to inflammation and tissue damage.

Clougherty said it's important for parents to consider -- if they have a choice -- their children's exposure to traffic and air pollution when deciding where to live, play and go to school.

But as the results indicate, she added, "the social environment might be equally, if not more, important to the child's health overall."

One of the best niches in the drop ship market that is making good profit is children's clothing. Notice that parents are always buying clothes for their children. At whatever age they are, they are constantly growing! So what better product to sell for your online business than children's clothing. Many parents or mothers today are career mothers. They have a job that is taking half their attention from household choirs which is why they turn to the internet for buying their children's clothes.

So for small business entrepreneurs, retailing children's clothing proves to be a lucrative venture. And most children's clothing retailers are turning to a wholesale drop shipper as their supplier. The reason behind why many retailers partners with drop ship suppliers is because they offer more benefits to the retailers.

What are those benefits

o The benefits of hassle free stocks and inventory for the retailer. Vendors will not have to worry about storage spaces or doing inventory when they are partners with wholesale drop shippers. They will keep stock of your merchandise until ready for delivery to your customers.

o The benefit of hassle free delivery and shipment. Drop shipping means that your wholesale supplier will take care of shipping the products you purchased from them directly to your customer. So once the customers order from you and the product has been paid for, retailers in turn orders the merchandise and pay it to the wholesale supplier. They will then deliver the products to your customer.

o The benefit of hassle free forms and documents. Since you will not be the one delivering or shipping the product to your customer means less paperwork for you. This means more time to spend looking for ways to market your website and making it more search engine optimized to get traffic to it.

Ending of the Space Shuttle Program Sad News for 'Star Trek' Fans (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I've long held out hope that one day soon mankind would go "boldly where no one has gone before." As a long time "Star Trek" nerd (a.k.a. Trekker), I was saddened when Atlantis landed. A history of space travel has come to an end. Now instead of the peaceful vision of a future highlighted by Gene Roddenberry, we have the possibility of a future of space commercialism as private firms take over launches and research.

The Space Race fueled "Star Trek" and, sometimes, vise-versa. Some people even chose their careers after being inspired by any of the five series. Inventors fashioned working gadgets after seeing them on the shows. The imagination and progression of the world as a whole is due in large part to the Space Race and "Star Trek" in general.

The pros from the end of the shuttle program is that the Space Race has really lost some fuel over time. I know that doesn't sound like a pro, so bear with me. When the United States was competing with the former Soviet Union, we worked steadily and made advances quickly. Over time, that race fizzled into a crawl. With private funding and the higher expectations that come along with it, we might actually see the light of further space exploration within the next 20 or so years. Everyday technology that comes from competition such as this will push the world into another techno age. This is ideal because, without the technological advances that a space race provides, the United States would be pushed behind other world powers.

But the cons make the outlook less promising. Roddenberry had a vision of a world that didn't thrive on monetary limitations. Instead of being driven by greed or the need for money, people were driven by their own goals of being the best they could be at whatever they wanted to be. Now companies that only have the bottom line to look at will take over where we've left off with the landing of Atlantis.

Not much good can come out of greed such as this. Think of the selfishness displayed in James Cameron's Avatar. Think about the rape of worlds over a natural resource. Think about a future of an overpopulated and dying Earth where, if you don't have enough money to travel away from it, you and your family are doomed to live by scraping by. That actually doesn't sound much different than the way life is these days. That isn't progression at all.

Overall, regardless of the pros, the end of the space shuttle program is a sad ending for Trekkers everywhere. But we hold out hope that it isn't an ending. Hopefully it is just a delay. In the meantime, "Star Trek" fans, live long and prosper. And keep imagining a better world.

Don?t pick against Jackson: Couture called a ?fake [expletive] has-been? for doing so

There are two Quinton Jacksons. The boisterous, cocky "Rampage" who showed up at the UFC 135 press conference on Tuesday in Denver and hypersensitive, delicate Jackson who lashes out like a youngster if he's criticized or called on the carpet.

We saw a great example of that when he threatened to quit MMA in late 2009 claiming he was being mistreated and used by the UFC. That came roughly 14 months after UFC management bailed him out and stuck with him after a bizarre driving rampage in Southern California.

This week, in between dropping some epic trash talk on young Jon Jones, Jackson flipped out on Randy Couture. What did Couture do? The retired UFC legend had the nerve to pick against Jackson in his last fight!

A Twitter war unfolded between the 33-year-old Jackson and Couture, 48.

Here's the video where Couture hurt Jackson's feelings:

Jackson wore Xtreme Couture/Affliction gear during his walkout at UFC 114x in May of 2010. It sounds like he's suggesting Couture's "anti-Jackson" picks are motivated by Rampage changing apparel providers.

Review: Faithfull still rocks but acts her age (AP)

Marianne Faithfull, "Horses and High Heels" (Naive)

Marianne Faithfull has survived a roller-coaster-like ride through life to reach the age of 64 that her friends, the Beatles, once celebrated in song. On her new CD, Faithfull still rocks but acts her age, unlike some of her contemporaries who vainly chase after their lost youth.

On "Horses and High Heels," which reunites her with producer Hal Willner, Faithfull shows her mastery at finding familiar and obscure songs to cover that she can relate to personally and transform. On the Carole King pop ballad "Goin' Back," a 1960s hit for Dusty Springfield, she poignantly recasts it to reflect the viewpoint of an older woman looking back on her past. Her distinctive world-weary, gravelly voice and acting skills add gravitas to the melancholic, fatalistic "Past, Present and Future," a quirky song by the Shangri-Las, spoken rather than sung to an accompanying theme based on Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata."

After overcoming writer's block following recent bouts with cancer and depression, Faithfull includes four originals among the 13 tracks that draw on recent life experiences. The guitar-driven "Why Did We Have to Part?" expresses regrets over a romantic breakup. The Celtic folk-inspired title track creates haunting late-night images of horses' hooves and women's high heels clattering on the streets of Dublin and Paris ? the two cities the British expat now calls home.

This album, recorded in New Orleans, has some songs that almost seem out of character for a singer long associated with the dark side of life. The rollicking blues-rock "No Reason," by British songwriter Jackie Lomax, sounds like a Rolling Stones song, while Allen Toussaint's "Back in Baby's Arms," with guest appearances by Dr. John and Lou Reed, finds Faithfull singing soul with a funky groove. Dare we say that Faithfull has finally arrived at a happier place?

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: On her original "Eternity," Faithfull samples the late Rolling Stone guitarist Brian Jones' 1968 recording in Morocco with the Master Musicians of Jajouka in an uptempo, and surprisingly optimistic, folk-rock song.

AP source: US officials met with Gadhafi govt (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A State Department official says U.S. officials have met with representatives of longtime Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's government.

The official says the purpose of the meeting was to deliver a clear and firm message that the only way forward in Libya is for Gadhafi to step down. The official says the meeting was not a negotiation session.

The official did not say what day the meeting occurred, but said it came after the U.S. announced Friday that it was officially recognizing Libya's main opposition group as the country's legitimate government, giving the rebel movement a major boost.

The official says the U.S. has no plans to meet with regime representatives again. The official was not authorized to discuss the meeting publicly and requested anonymity.

Apple Beats Competitors In The Market, But Flounders In Legal ...

Smartphone

Apple?s performance in the market continues to be stellar, but its performance in the smartphone patent wars?which it had a hand in starting?continues to be mixed, at best. This week, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) had another setback, when the full International Trade Commission ruled that Kodak was found to not be infringing Apple?s patents.

Apple?s battle against Kodak has been a tit-for-tat of patent attacks and counter-attacks in both federal district courts and at the U.S. International Trade Commission. In this most recent ruling, the full five-commissioner ITC upheld a ruling by an ITC judge that Kodak was innocent of infringement. (All decisions by ITC judges are reviewed by the full five-member commission which oversees them.)

While it?s Apple?s complaint that has failed here, this particular patent fight was started by Kodak, which has been going after many phone manufacturers in court, arguing that their cameras infringe Kodak image-processing patents. According to a report in Reuters (NYSE: TRI) on Monday?s decision, Kodak expects to get $250 million to $350 million from patent licensing each year through 2013.

Apple?s loss against Kodak comes on the heels of Apple?s first real victory in the smartphone battles?a ruling late last week that Android-powered HTC phones infringe two Apple patents.

Kids Fare Better in Crashes When Grandparents Driving: Study (HealthDay)

MONDAY, July 18 (HealthDay News) -- Some parents may hesitate to let their children ride in a car driven by grandparents because they believe the grandparent's driving skills may not be what they once were.

But, new research suggests that children are actually safer in auto accidents when a grandparent is at the wheel instead of a parent.

As a matter of fact, the odds of a child being injured in an auto accident were 50 percent less when a grandparent was driving.

However, one area where grandparents were found somewhat lacking was in child safety seat use. More than 25 percent of grandparents were lacking "optimal" child restraint use, and 2 percent of grandparents skipped child restraints altogether.

"More of the baby boomers are coming into grandparenthood now, and this important group of drivers of young children hadn't really been looked at critically," said study author Dr. Fred Henretig, an emergency room attending physician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and a grandfather himself. "Grandparents were a little bit less up-to-date on child restraints, but we discovered that the injury rate was lower in grandparent driver crashes," he noted.

"Something is going on. It looks like grandparents are doing something protective, but our study can't answer what that is," said Henretig, who added that he hopes this study stimulates even more research into the issue.

Results of the study will be published online July 18, and in the August issue of Pediatrics.

In general, older adults -- particularly after age 65 -- are more likely to be involved in automobile accidents, according to background information in the study. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that about 38 million American drivers are older than 65.

The study included insurance data on motor vehicle accidents that occurred from January 2003 through November 2007. The information was gathered as part of the Partners for Child Passenger Safety Study.

To be included in the study, there had to be at least one passenger who was under the age of 16.

The researchers found that grandparents were driving in 1,143 of the accidents, while parents were behind the wheel for 10,716. That means that grandparents make up about 9.5 percent of the drivers, yet the researchers discovered that grandparent accidents cause only 6.6 percent of the total injuries.

Children riding with a parent had a 5 percent increased risk of being injured in an accident, while the children cruising with a grandparent were 30 percent less likely to be injured in a crash, according to the study.

After adjusting the data to account for confounding factors, such as the type of car and the severity of the crash, the researchers concluded that children riding with their grandparents were 50 percent less likely to be injured in an accident.

And, if all grandparents could be current on child restraints, that number might be even higher. About three out of every four grandparents were using "optimal" child restraints.

"Parents should feel that grandparents aren't necessarily more dangerous behind the wheel, but grandparents do need to be carefully shown how to use the child safety restraint equipment," said Henretig.

Lynn Purdy, a registered nurse and program coordinator for the Child Passenger Safety Program, at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago, said she wasn't sure why grandparents' driving might prove safer in a crash, but suspected they might drive a little slower.

What may be more important, she noted, is that grandparents don't always use the most current child restraint techniques. "This is something to consider for whoever might be driving kids around," said Purdy.

She said that child restraint systems aren't always easy to use or install. The installation process can be so complicated that certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians have to attend classes for up to seven days, she added.

Purdy advised that anyone with a child safety seat in their car should try to take it to a certified technician to ensure that it's properly installed and being used properly.
